Characteristics
Swell is much more consistent north of Point Conception, especially during the winter months. It can be double overhead at some Ranch points and Jalama and flat in Santa Barbara proper. West swells are best.

Climate

Dominant Swell and Wind Direction :
Spring is cold and often windy with weakening swell coming from the north and west. Inconsistent but occasional fun waves. Cold water due to strong winds causing upwelling. Summer is flat south of Cojo Point on the Ranch due to shadowing by offshore islands. Occasional S and SW swells sneak through the channels though and create fun waves at some of the SB and Carpinteria points like Backside Rincon...don't count on it though.Fall can offer great west swell possiblities or be frustratingly flat. Usually clean conditions prevail with occasional offshores.Winter is the most consistent and powerful time of year with solid W and NW ground swells during a good season. W swells can light up all the points and spread the crowd around.

last of a dying swell
One more time with the new fish, trying to get some last waves out of this swell.  Decent session, almost nobody out, but not too many waves either.

small stuff at campus
Annie, Maggie and I went to campus for a session.  It was mushy and a bit crowded (for the number of waves).  Annie used the new fish board, and liked it.  Got a ride on it.

Converting Kevin & Stacy to Surfers
Kevin and Stacy's third time surfing in as many days.  They are really hooked, and with my foot feeling good enough to get wet (I sprained in on my previous session) we had a great time out there.  They both loved it.  I bet they w

Begin Surf Camp
Took Maggie's friend Jennifer out surfing for the first time.  She really liked it.  Also took my new, hand shaped 6.5 fish out.  It paddled and rode very well, but a fun broke out of it's binding and I had to take it

Need to escape the summer SB doldrums? From Gaviota, boat into Hollister Ranch. At least 10 high quality breaks. Perfect waves YEAR-ROUND and the prevailing wind is offshore all day long. See you in the line-up!
