surfing in Tonga
Tonga has great year-round surfing conditions. There are 170 islands of which less than 40 are inhabited. A yacht is the key to opening the incredible surf potential here. A very laid-back holiday destination with friendly locals and pleasant climate. Tonga is a mecca for oceansports enthusiasts.

Eua'iki is a beautiful little island and isn't hard to get to from Tongatapu. It's very fickle for surf. Theres only one spot that breaks with any quality and getting all the right conditions to come together would mean you'd need to spend a lot of time there. Eua'iki has an unjustified reputation for surf based on the fact that the King used to surf the whitewater reforms there back in the 1960's. He was taught to surf by Duke Kahanamoku at Waikiki and Eua'iki is the only spot around Tongatapu which offers whitewater reforms inside the lagoon (over sand /seaweed) that run up to the beach ...... like Waikiki. However its a great little island escape to grab some culture.

Offshore surfspots: they are all within paddling distance from shore. However the offshore spots are a different matter and you need local contacts to find them.

I'd go back
I spent 2 weeks in Tonga in Jan 2006. Loved it. Very cool, very friendly, great waves out the front epic waves on the outer reefs. We scored big time had a couple of south swells (Sick leftsup to 6ft)with a northswell (epic rights 6ft)in between. A couple of small days in 14. Take a book or 2. When you're not surfing there's not much else to do.

Fickle
To answer the poster below, Tonga is fickle. Verrrrrry fickle. It is easy for people with a vested interest in attracting tourists to Tonga to take photos on the best day of the year and post them on their websites, thus giving the impression that it is consistently like that. I worked in Tonga for 6 months and trust me, it is often flat for weeks, even months at a time. Unlike other South Pacific nations, the swell window is extremely small, because it needs to wrap into a protected bay to hit the reefs for them to break. You can even see it breaking huge on a bombie out to see from Ha'atafu, and it be 1-2 foot out the front. Very frustrating! In saying that it can get pretty good, but I would say you would have about 20 days a year of good surf in Tonga... not the best odds that's for sure. It's not cheap either, so Indo is definitely a better option, even though it is more crowded you will get way more waves. Hope this helps
