Channel Islands can provide good quality surf when the conditions are right. Channel Islands have one thing special: they have the most important tidal range in Europe(max40ft). Dozens of quality spots appear when the condtions are ideal. A pushing tide will dramatically boost the swell. The water is not polluted. Jersey is the largest island. When surfing in Jersey is mentioned thoughts automatically turn towards St Ouens Bay and in particular the area around the Watersplash. There are several other locations in St Ouens and elsewhere on the Island though. Guernsey has less spots but waves are excellent. Alderney (Aurigny) is one of the smaller, less known Channel islands. Only 12 km from the French mainland, this rocky island is swept by some of the strongest tidal currents in the English channel/la Manche The northern end of the island has several small beaches which picks up swell on big days. |
