I'm a believer? - So I take back what I said about the rivermouth. I've seen its potential and still can't believe I caught that place good twice in one week. Yesterday was insane. Low tide, 6 feet @ 15-to-17 seconds and a straight offshore wind. Light pack of locals. Plenty of waves for everyone. I think I might actually be sad when the bar goes away.

myth? only if told its great - it is kind of sloppy but its a surf break. Can be good little windswell peaks (but usually short rides) when everywhere else is blown out. definitely not a destination or 3 star or above wave. almost always closes out over head high.

Big River - I've surfed this coast for two decades, and maybe I'm more inclined to surf a certain left reef further down the coast or a couple of sandbars north of town on south swells, but I have never seen this rivermouth fire and have only seen one old grainy photo of a good overhead wave. Big River, as far as I'm concerned, is a myth.

Big river - I've surfed and bodyboarded here for a wile now. It's best when everywhere else is small, you can go there at low tide. The waves are very hollow(like teahuppu) at a negative tide.

figure it out - you guys have no idea what you're talking about...big river, with a good south swell will match any other wave that breaks up along this coast (from usal in the north to schooner in the south). the left off the cliffs edge at rivermouth is killer except when all the kooks come out. and, no the ab diver wasn't killed anywhere near here, that happened at blues beach like 25 miles north. i have seen whites out here, though, but i've also surfed here at night during the full moon without incident...just realize it: you're in mendo (just north of the red tri.) there ARE sharks here so pay attention to your surroundings.

This is my home break... - I've lived on this coast all of my life and first started learning to surf at Big River Beach. This can be a great spot when its good, like anywhere, and its convienent being in town. Great beginner waves in the Summer and close out sets, strong currents, and pounding barrels in the Winter. My uncle lost a friend surfing out here in the fifties, before wetsuits and leashes. Always surf with a buddy.

I remember the days when you had to look for someone to go surfing with, now there is always someone out on it when there are waves (and even sometimes when there are not!).

Almost all of the spots in this area are becoming more impacted by an increasing surf population on this coast. Tread lightly, leave only footprints, and give and show respect for the locals. Tear it up!

yes it is near there. - that was kibesillah rock. it is not exactly next door, but it ain't far.

surfed here last saturday. semi-fun, somewhat sloppy rivermouth surf. lined up way to the left along the cliff face, catching refraction peaks that popped up here and there. i was basically alone; couple logs and some boogies further up the beach closer to shore.

water's clear, clean (when the tide ain't coming out), and shallow.

shark attack, aug 04 - Isn't this VERY near where the AB diver got his head ripped off by a shark (literally decapitated like a seal) in mid Aug. '04??? Pretty dumb place to dive, but hey, just to let people know, there's sharks in dem der waters...
