Additional Surfing Infos
you can use from a 5´8 to a 7´0 surfboard, san blas(rights and lefts) is hard when it grows there is the time to go to matanchen when san blas is big, it wont let you get in, so you have to go to the other beahes, (matanchen , platanitos, santa curz or stoners - rights), they are very close.
  Overview
Atmosphere calm, friendly locals, really good food, a lot of mosquitos, but in good conditions it worth it
is hot in summer, very hot and some rain too, in december there is a nice weather but small waves. water cold in spring cause the
current of north but in general you only need a trunk and sunblock.
General i like it very much i think people there is great and locals some are really good surfer, i mean with world competition level
its a great a place to beginners in december-febraury but in a good season it can take a shit out of you.and it helps you to work in your moves but in not a powerful wave, matanchen it is but when the season it`s on
but its long enough to get tired, and its a very good tube(rights)

Change was inevitable
Thanks to all of you for the update about San Blas and Matanchen....please send more info. I lived there in the early 70's/80's and agree those were the best winters of my life; but took it for granted now that I look at what it meant to me at 60 years old. It was bound to change. I also was there in the early 90s and it still had that community feeling. I can only imagine it now thanks to the internet and the plastic hip, show-off crap introduced to the area. I am so glad I knew it when it was at a lower scale, and when the surfing and mota was a real adventurous treat. Say hi to Don, as he and I were good pals back then.

1968 & 3rd Point
...dropped out of Baylor University my junior year, went home to South Texas, retrieved my 8' Barry Kanaiaupuni pintail and headed for San Blas. Summer of '68, living in San Blas, driving up and down the coast surfin' spots from Puerto Vallerta to Mazitlan but the best was Playa Matanchen and 1st, 2nd and 3rd point. Just surfin', smoking the mota, getting turned on to the west coast sounds starting to make their way out of the Bay Area. Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Steppenwolf ("Goddam the Pusher Man"), Also Hendrix, Eric Burton and the Animals, Canned Heat, Mama's and the Papa's (God I was so hot for Michelle Phillips). Jack Keroack along with Timothy Leary, turn on, tune in, drop out! Summer of Love, Magic Bus and the Who done sung MY Gen..Gen..Geration and the Stone's Street Fighting Man!! Lotta great music, good dope and more waves than you could piss in. I wish I'd realized it but this was the best summer of my life. Had I known that it was I wouldn't have spent so much time waliking around in a cannabis induced semi-coma haze.

matanchen bay
went back one more time in early Nov '07.

caught 4 days of nice surf...the girls were on it one day, everyone surfing 2nd point and riding past the 1 st point.

got high at hippie don's with local Andra..

sadly, it seems San Blas is not as slow paced now, rap music and internet and loud fast cars.

the bugs at the bay are still bad at dusk and the new construction at the Bay is amazing.

Pepe's hotel Colon is gone replaced with a Corona bottling plant.

Still it was fun- the wave can still line up and give you a thrill.
