The Garden route is known to be one of the most beautiful and exciting parts of South Africa and the surf is excellent. It has its own micro-climate and often has different weather to the rest of South Africa. All year round you should find something somewhere but the best and most frequent swell comes in winter. (June - August) Starting from around Mosselbay and ending around Natures valley, this is one of South Africa's most famous holiday hotspots so you are garaunteed to find it crowded at the more well known spots during summer but most the crowds are at the holiday towns like Mossel Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Buffalo Bay, Vic Bay etc, leaving the other areas with fewer crowds. Loads of places to stay close to surf somewhere as everything is around the coast so just take your pick of a surfspot and book accomodation early! Takes around 2 hours drive from the beginning to the end so just look for where the best surf is, some of it is visible from the road. There are plenty of good pubs around aswell and the nightlife is crazy. This is where the best new years eve beach parties are! |
