fun, friendly - i was in rio last week and rented a board for a day. surfed this break 3 times and had some fun. i met a cool guys at the rental shop in arpoador and he was out the next morning. locals were friendly. it was pretty small, about chest to shoulder, maybe it get more intense on a bigger day. there seemed to be a lot of trash in the water in the evening, i think it's because they open the canal that separates leblon from ipanema. so watch out for that. fun lefts.

- Most crowded spot in Rio, but when it's really big (more than 2m).. the crowd stay in the sand !

best left - when the swell is good it's by far the best spot in rio: powerfull waves long walls and barrels. However the crowd is nervous but you can scape from it some days (try very early or just before sun going down).

Good wave full of kooks! - Arpoador is a very good wave.. a left that peels off of the hill at the Copacabana side of Ipanema. The problem with the place as in most of the more crowded places in Brazil, too many kooks. The Brazilian surfers are more about show than go, and frequently try to pull off some ridiculous move that they never pull off. They drop it on everyone without shame and that's the cold hard reality about Brazilian surfing. It seems that they take their disrespect for others in the water when and wherever they go, Hawaii, Panama, Mexico, you name it.
Even had the Hui(Black Shorts) on the north shore of Oahu chase most of them off for a long time. They finally had enough of their crap. Now they are a little bit more careful, but still a noisy and disrespectful bunch of surfers.
The funny thing is that they are pretty cool otherwise, although always noisy and in big groups. Strength in numbers I guess. But really, Brazilians are a super proud bunch of people, and they aren't ashamed about that, frequently mouthing off at top volume in their Portugese, as to say 'We are Brazilian and we are so cool'.
I love Brazil and particulary the ladies who blow some serious doors on the majority of women out there, and that it no bullshit.

If you want to surf good Brazil, go to Fernando de Noronha during the surf season. There you will catch barrels and plenty of then to go around.

freakin` dangerous - Dude, i went there about two years ago, lost my board and got my ass kicked by a bunch of skiny boys...Rio sucks, you should avoid this place unless you have tour personal body guard!

can be Classic...but lots of other places - I've lived nearly in front of Arpex for almost 10 yrs now and surf almost every day....just not at Arpex. Dont underestimate how great this left can be with E/SE swell. Holds to double overhead with perfect peeling "point-type" lefts. Crowd is a constant unless you are near the beach and can monitor for the freak swell that appears out of nowhere brining the spot from waist to overhead in a couple of hours. Happens more than you think and catches heavy local crowd off guard....best chance for waves with only 10-15 guys. One more thing. VIRTUALLY EVERY SURFER IN THE WATER HERE IS AN EXCELLENT SURFER WITH LITTLE ACCESS TO OTHER LOCALES (no cars).

what a jam ! - I've been surfing 12 dayes in Arpador, the spot is good but there're so many surfers.....suggest to go to prainha, lower risk of accidents.
