All tides will break here, but it depends on the sandbars and the size as well as direction of the swell. Certain direction swells will be better at high tide(NE) and some are better at low to mid(SE/S)

Drove from VB to rodanthe with a buddy and it was only about 3-4 feet. So we drove to frisco where it was too epic, it was like 8 or 9 feet breaking way past friso peir. no one was out and we were scared of all the sharks so we ended up ha More...
live there
Quite simply the most consistent and powerful spot on the eastern seaboard(which is still not saying much). But on its day can rival many other powerful beachbreaks. If you are forced to live on the east coast no other spot reaches as far into the Atlantic or can recieve any more swell than this spot. The offshore bars can be surfed by boat and can hold size(only a few have done this). The secret is no longer..too bad.

Listen to the wisdom
Just like any other break on the southern east coast of the U.S.this place breaks best during a good nor-easter in the winter or a strong low or hurricane in the summer.Free advice to any of you who think coming up here from Fla.will enhance the surf size when you get restless.

update
I was down in Rodanthe May 15-18 and it was flat and extremely calm, too calm. There was a slight offshore breeze, but other than some nasty chop on Saturday, there was nothing that could even be called a wave. BTW, the pier is standing and intact. laate!
