I've been surfing Bird Island a couple times a year since about 2002. It's really nice because it's never crowded. Last summer I saw 3 others out other than myself, and that's the most I've seen. BEWARE OF THE BOAT WRECK! At high tide, there's a boat wreck that's submerged about a foot or so. It's right off the start of the jetty. The rumors about nudity are true. One day I witnessed 9 naked men sun bathing by the jetty. Besides surfing, it's a great place to park the boat and chill.

Dunes
Can one still camp and lay out in the dunes now that Bird island is owned by the state?I also hear the west end is often clothing optional, is that true?

PEACEFUL ESCAPE
I HARDLY EVER SEE ANYONE SURFING ON BIRD ISLAND. I GET THERE A DIFFERENT WAY BY SWIMMING JUST BEFORE LOW TIDE (APX.1 HR.BEFORE) FROM CHERRY GROVE POINT TO BIRD ISLAND. YOU HAVE APX.1 1/2 HRS.AND THEN YOU NEED TO SWIM BACK ACROSS. ALWAYS TAKE A BOARD OR IF YOU ARE NOT A SURFER, TAKE A NOODLE! CURRENTS CAN BE DANGEROUS. SUPER PLACE TO RELAX, WALK AND SURF. ALWAYS TAKE A FRIEND.
