Ghajn tuffieha Access |

follow the signs to "golden bay"...."ghajn tuffieha" is just the next bay. you can catch the bus to get there, the bus drivers may hassel you for bringing your board, but just ignore their nasty looks and if need be buy an extra ticket for your surfboard. go past golden bay and get off the bus near the old ruin sitting atop the cliff at Ghajn Tuffieha. You need to go down a heap of stairs to get to the break and generally it always looks a little too small and mushy to surf when looking at it from the top of the cliff. Usually it looks better when you get down to the beach. |

| | being in the med this place is unaffected by tides. This is the best spot to surf on malta, but it does not often break. you need to keep track of weather conditions and take a gamble when things look right. Check out the weather for Malta here: http://www.maltaweather.com/ and you can check live vrirtual bouy data here: http://www.buoyweather.com/wxnav6.jsp?region=wmed&program=Maps click on the top left hand corner of malta and wait, the seas needs to be about 2.5m and bigger and from the NW or similar direction. You need to keep an eye on these sites and be ready to up and go when the conditions are good, you probably only get waves once or twice per week from March to June.
I lived in Malta for about 4 months and managed to get it right about 80% of the time. What you need to get the swell is a force 4 or greater wind from the nth or north west. I only ever managed to surf in these strong winds, i never managed to get a day where the swing changed and the swell was still there, but when it was onshore i got some fun waves, similar to a beachy on the gold coast, 2-4ft - lefts and rights. Because of the huge cliffs the wind does not effect the surf as much as you would expect even when it is gale force. The first time I surfed this break in 15 degree water and gale force winds without a wettie, pretty crazy but i was desperate and it was worth it - also i had no idea if it was ever going to break again while i was there :) You gotta take what you can get 'ey?

alot of stairs down to the beach from the road means a shitload of steps back up to the road after a surf. also, there is nowhere really to shower or change unless the cafe is open, and they charge you an arm and a leg just to have a shower - not the friendliest of crew those guys. at least because the tides are negligible you can stash your towell and keys on the beach and not worry about the tide coming in and picking it up :) |

this is the best spot in malta (maybe gozo is better i dont know as I never surfed there). forget golden bay, i looked there every time I went over and it was never breaking, it was also slightly more exposed to the wind and was always more crowded. I saw tiny waves in mellieha one day, but too small to surf. also saw surfable waves at sliema on one of those crazy stormy days, but it breaks onto a concrete shelf right on the surface, unfortunately, making it impossible to surf. |
