Locals of Guethary - During a surf/birthday trip with my boy in October 2003 we got to surf here in morning glass 2 metre waves. The standouts were some local 'senior-citizen' longboarder (with a peaked neoprene cap) & a blonde 'Amazon" surf-goddess. They caught almost ALL the waves skillfully, fearlessly & HAPPILY! They were friendly & MODEST. We`ll never forget that session! We`ll never forget them! Aloha!

- Wiping out a good day at guethary will give you a great experience: being an old dirty clothe in a good washing machine!

Why? - This afternoon a surfer around 40 was punched by a "local" in the parking close to avalanche.Local idiot was screamin' to everybody nearby tellin' tourist "go to biarritz",etc and insulting everybody arround that were looking a pretty sunday session with 10ft sets.I surfed the wave occasionaly never had a problem but things like this are really worrying, the right arm tattoed guy with a VW Golf II red called himself local will not be welcomed anymo' at any other beach around,be sure.Hope see you soon away home.

What a Wave. It's a dream... - Nothing more to say. The shape of the wave is perfect. Looks smaller from the beach than it is. Big rips, big waves, big drops, big bail out, big power, big ride. Use a Longboard or gun. Cool and friendly Locals, but suckers are everywhere. Nice area with a lot of good Surfspots which can handle big swell's. I had the worst wipe out in my surfing history there and didn't find the other part of my Board after eating sand. So be prepared for action...
Any questions, contact me!!

mmmm - surfed parlimentia late aug 06, lovely peaks, strong rips, talented locals, chilled lifeguards, usual spongers getting in the way, but room for all! you can watch guethary for an indicator of monsters coming and get in position for some big big drops and quick down-the-lines. Good for preparing yourself for the real deal over at guethary, wave has power- was on a 9`6, but got better rides when i hauled the 12` log out the back- big wave+big board= big cheesy grin and hacked off locals! Going back asap, for guethary this time, just gotta do a few hundred push ups first and learn to hold my breath for 6 mins.... Once again, watch out for height restrictions if you take a van, you can park in the street if you`re sensible and discreet.

Guethary - Me and ma boy Adam surfed there @ the beginning of October 2003 (ma boy`s Bar-Mitzva Surfari-Trip). It was awesome! We paddled out around the south-sde of the break @ 10.00am & at the peak we were accompanied by 2 locals, a blonde 'Amazon' surf-goddess & a 60+ Kamikaze. The peak jacked-up to 3 metres on-the-face & the goddess & the Kamikaze had no problems 'getting-on' the frontside breaking wave as she had a gun & he a longboard. Even though we were wrongly equipped we 'got-on', navigated the drop & shot down that long, long beautiful wall. Adam was only a 13 year old grom then, but the locals & the visiting ASP Pros marvelled @ his fearlessness & skill. We surfed there until we dropped! What a classic break! Perfect waves in glassy conditions. The 'wonder' was that all around the break it was like a pond! Guethary 'tales' will be handed-down & told thru` all the new generations of McManus`s surf-freaks.

Not that bad? - Well, the place is completely different when it's small: It's basically a long board wave. So you can't really compare a small day not being that bad with a big day. I got my ass kicked the first time I went out on a 6 to 8 foot day... I was 16 and a beginner who didn't even know how to duck dive. Didn't know what I was getting into.

I sat in the linelup with a 6'4 looking at the pic breaking top to bottom until a big set loomed in the horizon... scariest thing in the world!! A bit like surfing big Haleiwa on the North Shore and realising you're not going to make it.
The first wave of the set sucked me backward and I felt sucked into a hole... it was brutal.. I was out of breath when I came up and had to go under 3 consecutive ones...and got dragged all the way...

Later in my teens I went to live in Hawaii for 5 years and learned to surf Sunset and Waimea and other spots on the north shore. I can honestly say Guetary is as heavy as Sunset and the rip current flows like a river when it's big. As far as power, Guetary is a brutal big wave that will hold you down and drag you under water for a few hundred yards...

However it's a fun wave to learn to surf bigger waves safely... But look out when it's 10 foot plus, you'd better be in shape...

its not that bad - yeh this spot is not as dangerous as people say and it is an easy wave in comparison to spots like chopes and pipe, i surfed it when i was about 11 or 12 years old. im 17 now and i cant wait to go back on some bigger days!seriously long wave.
