going in november - Is there any info about rush reef in Mid November. I will be there and I think that late hurricanes, and early winter storms might help out with swell

Some Truthful Insight to Rush Reef - I lived in Elbow Cay for almost three years, and loved surfing Rush Reef (the spot now referred to that is out front of the Abaco Inn). It definitely is one of my favorite spots to surf, but one thing is for sure, this is NOT a world class break. I've surfed world class breaks, and although this is a very good wave, you can't say it's a five star rated spot. It's possibly a four star, but I would more likely call it a three star rated wave (on average). Secondly, in all the times I've surfed there, I have never once seen a shark in the water while surfing, though I did have a 6' shark tail me all the way in from the reef after I spear-fished a grouper. You can bet your last dollar you'll see them if you're spear fishing, but not likely if you're just surfing. Compared to many other breaks in the Bahamas, sharks don't really frequent this spot like I've seen in other places off James Point, Walkers Cay and Hole-in-the-Wall. Enjoy!

Rush Reef - If anyone cares... I am the photographer that took the photos of Ronnie Rannie at Rush Reef. I can attest to where Rush Reef is... we named it. It's not out in front of the inn... its the break in the middle of the bay off to the left, where some people call it Indicas. That was actually Rush Reef.

Not the actual Rush Reef - This break was originally called the Inn break, for obvious reasons, and the break out in the middle of the bay was named Rush Reef, in an article about Elbow Cay by Daytona shaper Ronnie Rannie, in a seventies east coast surf magazine. (I surfed the real Rush Reef with him once, and he confirmed that it was indeed "Rush Reef".) The real Rush Reef is a little like Velzyland, (or Smyrna or Blowhole) in that it depends on swells that refract around feathering sections on an outside indicator to form peaks at the break. At six foot its definitely more of a rush than the Inn break, but bigger than that and the indicator messes it up, whereas the Inn break can handle serious size. Some Brevard guys writing for a Cal mag claimed that the hollow break in the bay was called Indicas, after a local herb, but if anything that was probably the other way around, and the break had been named for its outside "indica"tor. Then, to avoid confusion with the Inn break, the Inn break got called Rush Reef, even though most of the time its long left is more like Mush Reef. Still, its horseshoe right isn't weak for its size, and isn't so thin lipped. And it must be a rush for kooks to sight down the line on such a long left, knowing that they're gonna make it if they don't fall off. But, the real Rush Reef deserves its given name back, since, all alliteration aside, Ronnie Rannie's article "Rush Reef" was a whole lot better than that later, mass market article that claimed that the outside break in front of the Inn is Rush Reef.

NEED CHEAP - LAST VISITED IN 2000, LOVED IT. STAYED IN A RENTED HOUSE WITHIN 3 MIN. WALKING TO RUSH REEF AREA FOR $500 A WEEK. PLANNING ON RETURNING THIS FALL AND LOOKING FOR SAME TYPE OF SET UP. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS.

Elbow Cay - I have surfed there several times over several years and it is capable of being totally world class especially Rush Reef, I have seen it as good as anywere in the world. Sharks are thick out there and it is one hell of a paddle, but with a few friends can be totally rewarding. There can be and is surf year round but best in winter. I have seen epic swell in middle of August as well so who knows. I am going back in June and will be hitting it again so will post. Also, anyone who said Rush Reef isnt world clas has never seen it fire because it can be GNARLY!

Best time to go - When is the best time of the year to go? I have a month off in the winter starting January 6th. I wasn't sure if I should go to Elbow Cay or not. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

no title - i went to elbow cay this summer and watched the break in front of the abaco inn all week, compared to the usual surf here in s.c the wave seemd good and consistent but ive never surfed over a reef is this particular reef tough, what are some things i need to know about it?
