Daet is a great surf spot for beginners. It is not crowded even during the weekends. The locals are very accommodating. Great talents are always shown by its natives. Real surfers rip the waves of Bagasbas Beach. You'd rarely see a poser--probably during the holy week, wherein it could get crowded. Baker is a maniac. It's true, and it's been proven. But I heard that he is actually a good friend--to boys, mind you. Good thing he already went back to Cebu. Anyho, the "surf shack" is for Manilenos. In short, for posers. Go to the surf station if you really want to hang out with true surfers. Mingle with Owen, Onyo, Mariano, Jong, Duque, Mocha, Karen, Bernie, and the likes. Rest assured you'll be very well taken care of. If you get lucky, you could easily spot the "adopted locals" or "former Manilenos"--Jot, Baldo and Junne. I think the three of them already live there. There's also another spot--San Jose--which has a channel, thus easier to paddle into. It's a little far, though. But worth it. Daet is a great practice ground if you really want to be a surfer. It's an 8-hour bus ride from Manila via Philtranco and a 10-hour bus ride via Superlines. It's an adventure that you'll certainly never get tired of.
