Additional Information
Aberavon picks up as much swell as gennith perhaps more if the direction is right
. Its pretty exposed and only really works on mid-high tide. There are a few chioces of wave here .
The first point is mainly for the ripping locals , swell bounces off the breakwater and creates a nice
steep powerfull wave (lefts mostly) Further along th beach are several other places to surf all with good quality and power
The water can be really bad and it can get pretty hectic in winter. Get out well before high tide on big swells otherwise you will
be in trouble cos the waves bounce off the man made breakwater and cause havoc.
On big winter swells the smaller bay to the right hand side has a really good wave but again very polluted!

Atmosphere
Aberavon has the reputation of being really bad for localism. There is even a large sign
saying "locals only" when you enter the beach. I have personally found the locals..
more friendly
than anywhere on the gower if you make an effort. Respect the locals, first rule, there is a high standard of surfing here and they dont like non-locals, and kooks on there peak, i ve seen people get punched and cars trashed, so beware if your not a local here. Its best to surf down the beach i think, its alot better, you have a right aswel as a left and offers the same power. so if you dont want to be ganged up on, go down the beach.
Chris ball (local)
other surfers welcome but please stay off the main peak...most surfers here surf on a daily or weekly basis...and respect is paramount, you are not in llangland so we do not accept others on the peak....There is a reputation for violence here...there are 55.000 people on the sandfields estate so when you get told to F-O go as there are no fare fights in aberavon...more often than not 5-6 guys turn up. If you want to have a go this is the place for you...they enjoy the training...also one of the best places to learn kick boxing on the other side..
cheers chris

General
Not exactly the tropics and the water is nasty but the wave can more than make up for it. Low tide can be a super wave on the right swell direction, hollow, and very powerful.

Hmm. - From Port Talbot, and wondering if 'afan was suitable for beginners, and where and when is the best time to go down without annoying the locals, hehe.
