2017 Western Sahara update - We are currently completing a surf road trip, with hire car 2×4 Duster, from Marrakesh to Nouakchott and back. West Sahara remains a disputed territory, governed by Morocco, and the politics between local Saharans and Moroccans remain. Miroccan stamp required only. Numerous checkpoints in West Sahara however we rarely got pulled over and the police were always very friendly. Marutiana checkpoints take time as we were stopped at every one, although again military very friendly. No landmines, only bordering south and only if you go off the beaten track. Although the free zone is currently a red zone, everything felt really safe and friendly.
Politics aside, we are here for the surf. Areas pointed out by wannasurf.com, all are good for kite surfing and windsurfing. Saw no surfer surfers except in Dakala, where apparently the surf was going to get big over the next few days. . Other spot below Imlili, near Chica, had a massive hidden fishing port and beautiful sunset. Apparently great waves round the back yet massive area in construction by hundreds of fisherman, and being the only woman in town, an undercover police advised my friend that is was not safe for us to be there (Although again only felt good vibes) hence this spot may take some more time to find. Bourjour, next to th He presidents holiday place, near the roundabout as pictured, was flat (end November) with no one in the water and only a few locals sitting overlooking the ocean. Currently driving back to Sidi Ifni on our way back to Marrakesh to take another look.
Hope this helps.
