Great place - I went there last year. Left Cuba and went there with a new board from Rico de Souza, greatest shaper from Brazil. There were big swell and nice locals. It helps to speak the language. Local really had fun showing where the best spots were and was a great day.

Saquarema - We discovered this place in 1970. I went to the American H.S. in Rio, and we used to go up there and camp on the beach for weeks on end. We turned the Brazilians onto the place, and they used it as a practice ground for S.A. competitions. I've seen Itaiuna breaking 25-30 feet plus with a good Antarctic winter swell. One day it was breaking on the reef way up at the north end of the beach beyond Saquarema - perfect monster lefts with the offshore blowing the peaks 200 feet back behind the crests. The wave was at least a 1/2 mile offshore with a riptide next to it that looked like the freight train to Africa. We were good but not crazy - nobody even thought of going out. If you caught it just right and had the balls for it, this would be a tow in spot on days like that.
