i got screwed - hello, i am a surfer who lives in north county san diego and it has been a dream to go to the mentawai islands for years now.
after doing alot of research on the internet and elsewhere i had found one of the cheaper boat charters, on an older boat. this company had represented itself well in the surf shops and it seemed like a good deal. (you may have seen the flyers in the shops too, Good Sumateran)
so finally after saving up for a while and financial help from my family, i was off to get the waves of my life. ... or so i thought. it turns out once i get off the plane and get picked up by the company, the boat was not ready. infact the peaple who do all the work for Good Sumateran had only heard about the trip 2 days prior to my arrival. so after bieng checked into a not so great hotel in a not so great town.
there i had to stay for 2 nights only to get to the harbor and the boat could supposebly not able to get permission to leave the harbor due to weather off shore. so i slept in the boat that night in a bed that was wet from a leak on the deck, i figured.
the crew launched the boat in the middle of the night while i was sleeping, and finally 3 days later (since i got off the plane) in the evening we arrove in the mentawais. then the most surprising thing is when i woke up i discovered that there is not a surf guide on the boat that he went home to california, so there is 3 indonesian guys, only one of them know a tiny bit of english and the others dont speak english, and 2 (including me)americans who dont speak indo.
the guy told us that the surf guide told him to stay in one general area, and he didnt know why. so we did and we got the shittiest waves possible, on the islands.out of a 7 day trip which was supposed to be 10 there was only 5 days i was somewhat motivated to surf the mushy peaky left. the only good thing about being out there was the warm water, and sunny weather.
then once we arrove i find out that because i was on the boat with no phone or internet access my flight had been changed to an earlier time causing me to miss the flight home. now i am on my second day of trying to get a flight out of here with no help from Good Sumateran other than one ride to my hotel.
i submit this story to wannasurf.com so the readers are aware that the company Good Sumateran is verry disorganized and untruthful, and in my opinion not in the business to see the customers have a good time or the stoke of the sport. just as long as they make their money, and satisfy themselves.

Is it that crazy? - I am aware that the place was deserted and is now overrun. Is this not propaganda to keep people away? I have no idea. I am aware that Lances right and left get really packed regularly as they are famous. I thought it was still possible. These cunts with their boats should be banned. What are they gonna do next? Open a mcdonalds boat?

Mentawai Tide Chart Anyone? - Hey There

Can anyone tell me a web sight or other source for the tides along the Mentawais? Be nice to know whether I'm surfing into or out of the tide as I skip along the reef.
thanks
Andres

Its a ZOO - Just got back, been comming sceince 96, and let me tell you its a JOKE. For the money you spend you might as well go to Bali now the crowds are the same, 40 people at ULUS 40 people at Lances Left. Same same. So ask your self what am I paying for ...not uncrowded waves thats for sure thought SARS and the Terrorists would keep the crowds down....no such luck. Just less yanks but more Aussies and Brazil nuts. Youll get more waves for your cash eleswhere. It used to be the best place for a cash to wave ratio now its the worst, theres well over 60 boats workin the area, you do the math. Mentawai or no Mentawai it just cant handle those numbers. The point is to stay ahead of the crowd not follow it.
