the B in BA stands for Bastard! - 2010/07/01 20:52So I've got an elaborate itinerary to South America all booked, but unfortunately the first leg to NY (where I'm in transit) is with every surfers favourite airline, BA. They backed down from their "zero tolerance" surfboard stance last year, but it appears it's only lip service, as the new restrictions' limits the length of your stick to a measly 190cm. Anyway, long story short, I've measured my board, and if I tape the bag tight round the tail, it comes to a whopping 191cm. Does anyone have any experience travelling with BA under this new regime, how anal are they? What are my chances if I risk it at the check-in desk, 1cm over the limit and a big smile on my face?

Re:the B in BA stands for Bastard! - 2010/07/20 08:55Travelled with BA from SA to UK with 2 boards. They initially did not want to even look at them until I produced the printout of the new policy and then no problems. I suppose its like any big organisation, the info doesn't always reach all of the people all of time, and sometimes language can be a problem. Just say the bag conforms to the regulation length and blag it, smile and cross your fingers. Loads of people seem to have such a downer with airlines - surely by carting your board around you realise how much of a pain in the arse it is too deal with and yet for a very small sum of money (in relative terms) we can transit the globe, with our boards. With petrol at £1.19 per litre its a miracle you can travel anywhere. If you drive in Europe the motorway costs more than a plane ticket!!
