a few thoughts on morocco - 2010/02/27 01:42 hey
i just came back from morocco and feel like sharing a few thoughts i have about it..
i hesitated so long whether to go or not, partly due to the many contradictory things that are being written about it in surf forums
i am so happy i decided to go after all because i would have missed out on some great experience, if i wouldn't, i think it's a truly beautiful country, despite the fact it is about being ruined by tourism..
anyway..

1st thing - going alone as a girl.. i was pretty worried about that, and ended up being totally alright. obviously you get a lot a lot of attention and people talking to you, salut la gazelle, but if you keep a low profile, dress in a modest, unsexy way, avoid walking alone after dark and walking alone in remote areas, say no firmly and don't flirt around
you'll be fine ! don't worry about that. there is some hassle, but i didn't feel threatened. most people are very friendly.

2nd thing - tourist hassle in general
yes it's true that you get loads of people trying to sell you stuff, and also trying to rip you off. but, again, it all depends so much on your attitude. if you don't behave like a "stupid tourist" you'll find that most of moroccans are friendly, helpful people. means: show some genuine interest in their country, apart from surfing and buying stuff. show respect - after all many people make their living from tourism. be firm - if you don't wanna buy anything, neither just looking or drinking tea, insist on that. respect that youre in a muslim country and so on.

3rd thing - localism
heard some bad things on localism in taghazout, but i have to say all moroccan surfers i met in the water were real friendly. despite the fact that i m not such a good surfer and it happens to me being in somebody's way. i think if you respect general surfing rules you're alright.. try to communicate with the other surfers around and if someone's on the wave, don't go for it. but that's so normal anywayy. just have a laugh with the others around.

hm ok i just felt like i needed to write this in case there are some people out there who hesitate whether morocco is a good place to go or not
i am curious to get to know other people's opinions but i personally think it is

only thing i would say
taghazout is definitely touristy and crowded, and the beaches are not so clean..
it's a pity how the good places are being destroyed if too many people go there..

anyway
i loved it

greetings from josefina

Re:a few thoughts on morocco - 2010/02/27 06:02 Very good stuff, thank you for sharing.

Awesome that you had a good time.

I hope it is not surfer's that are not keeping the beach clean, that would be shocking, I don't know that I have ever met a surfer that is not respectful of the environment of which they love!

Re:a few thoughts on morocco - 2010/02/28 03:15 Hi Josefinalua,
glad to hear You did Morocco and had an exciting trip.
Tourism is a problem not only there. All over the world bloody tourist dump waste wherever they go. Liquid Peace - sad thing is, amongst them are many "surfers". The make open fire in nature reserves and leave the char mixed with cans the next day.

Re:a few thoughts on morocco - 2010/02/28 07:39 Now I know, I am officially "old", I seriously don't know any surfer's who would do any of that!

Re:a few thoughts on morocco - 2010/02/28 19:31 i think most surfers don't go there and pollute the beaches.. but it's because of the surfers that places like taghazout grow in an uncontrolled way and spoil the environment... i think some places grow faster than people are able to handle it.. apparently 10yrs ago you couldnt even buy wax in taghazout and now it's packed with surfshops, appartments, restaurants....
