Montanita is great
Not sure where some of these people are coming from?
I spent 5 weeks in Montanita.
I never saw a prostitute! The local were VERY friendly -both on and off the waves. There was some drugs - like anywhere else in the world. But only if you went looking for it. Its NOT in your face.
I studied Spanish there at Montanita Spanish School and had excellent teachers, the price was reasonable, and the staff friendly.
Town itself was clean, and so was the beach. They take great pride in cleaning it everyday.
All in all a great experience.

Montañita rules
Hi, we were in Montañita for a few days, made lots of friends, came back at the end of our Ecuador trip and had a good surf! Looking forward to returning asap! I can recommend Sweetsurf, these guys are good teachers and lots of fun to hang out with! ciao, Suzan

montanita is wrong
O.K ,the locals now tell non locals to piss off out of the water on the point,funny they arent originally from Montanita and come from the decrepid filth of Guayaquil....The only people who speak english there are the gringo tourists and the semi permanent flock of utter scum whos only means of survival are sucking the blood out of the tourists..ARTISANS who couldnt draw a stick figure but happily sell coke to fools heart attack bound,did I mention the psostitutes,interpols amussing attempts to clean up the drug problem in town and the comunas habit of being the most untrusted and disliked in a country renound for ummmmmmmm ahhhhh untrustworthy regulating bodies.......Oh,who the hell wrote the spanish school there is expensive,you are an idiot,5 bucks an hour ......shit mate,the .6g bags of coke flooding town are only 5 bucks so how can the lessons be considered expensive...The point is only good when you catch it uncrowded and as the standard of surfing isnt as high as might be expected the local and underlying attitude which is anything but love-peace and tolerance,is completely laughable............Before anyone steps in with some idiot like "you dont know what your talking about " reply let me say this.....I know Montanita and ecuador pretty well,99 percent of ecuadors real surfers whos stoke and attitude is still un-contaminated and un-affected dislike montanita and all it represents......Do yourself a favor,find a muy caliente chica de locombia in Montanita,get the hell out of town and head north ....If you really want you could get a boat out to some of the reefs just south of puerto cayo and surf some trully epic uncrowded waves without the scene.......Theres probably 50 people in Montanita who arent focused solely on money and living off gringos,the rest of the town are going to hell real fuckn quick......hippies stink by the way...............

I agree with Joe. Dont go to the Montanita spanish school to study Spanish. Way to expenisive. Ask the locals, there are other teachers that is cheaper and better. To surf Montanita is great! Always waves...

I dont recommened the spanish school in Montanita. Really expensive, the teachers are not all that and the owner is mean.

Surf tour
I went on a one day tour with www.sweetsurfecuador.com and had a great time. We surfed three different places, had great food and it was cheap. Awesome guide that knows everything about the Ecuadorian waves. I also recommend you to stay at the point. Relaxed and quiet, even if it is a little bit more expensive - worth it!
