Fly to Santa Marta airport from any major Colombian city. From there, drive about 40mins until you get to the entrance to the Parque Nacional Tayrona. You will have to pay to get in but it isnt very much. Leave your taxi or car behind at Canaveral and walk for about 40 mins until ou get to a sort of encampment. Hire out a hammock, 13,000 pesos a night, about £4 and get surfing! You will be amazed!
Arrecifes Surf
Good surf around January. I'm from Colombia and love this spot. Best spot to me was to the right once you get to arrecifes over towards the eco-habs. Stayed in Aviaturs Hammpcks on arecifes very clean. Don't stay in cabo.

surf in arrecifes
I just spent a week in Tayrona... didnt bring a board and basically salivated over the waves in Arrecifes from my hammock. I have to agree that Tayrona is one of the most magical places Ive ever been, BUT the surf at Arrecifes does not lend itself well to beginners. Its a long paddle out and closes out like a madman. It ain't exactly San Onofre... As for meeting people, there is a rotating cast of backpackers in and out every day, as well as what seems to be a semi-permanent community of Israelis out at El Cabo. For the most part, the majority of travelers you will meet in a place like Tayrona will be cool; only people who think "outside of the box" find their way to places like this in the first place. The family who owns the restaurant and campground in Arrecifes is mega friendly. Its quite easy to meet people. I'd have to put Tayrona up there with the Corn Islands in Nicaragua and Praia Ferrugem in Brasil as one of the coolest places Ive ever been. Great diving in nearby Taganga, as well...
