i think grumari is the best surfbeach in rio for surfers who hate a crowd...
really cool place at the and of the beach u can easy paddle out...
but dont go there alone as a "non-local".
this beach is not prainha arpoador etc.
just a localbeach but u can go there with a local thats OK

You can only access by car and buses dont go, Taxis its impossible to get one back... There is a Rio surf tour I organised to go on from a hostel in the City,I had heaps of fun and its a easy,cheap way to get around...
On bigger days it can break a right off the point at the end of the beach(a easy paddle out in a rip next to the rocks). Otherwise its best and most consistent for surfing in the middle of the beach.A beautiful peaceful beach to hangout for the day!!! This spot has amazing back drops with cactus, banana plants, plams and huge rocks to climb and watch magical sunsets.
As Its a Nature Reserve there are no such thing as locals. During the week you can find a peak to yourself and freinds, heres mellow and I have had many great fun surfs here,It has good sand banks that forms a peaky wave and holds up a smackable wall to the inside, then can barrel. They filmed a part of the city of gods here and u2 filmed a music video with them at grumari. There are food Kiosks there. The north end of the beach is the only nudist beach in Rio. This area is hidden by rocks and trees from the road and main part of the beach.

Grumari 100%
Thats one of the best waves in Rio de Janeiro. Its not that close to the city, even better 'cause you get no crowd. Nice rights there!!! I had one of the best surfing days in my life at Grumari, just my mates and I.
