lots of fun
just spent a week in Rio, caught lots of good waves at Barra da tijuca. nice beach, gorgeous women, warm water, good waves - what else do you need?

Barra is overrated
I've just been to Rio, and hated Barra de Tijuca. I've stayed near posto 8 (Ayrton Senna street), the beach was full of trash everywhere and the water somewhat polluted, you could see stains on the sea of some sort of waste (I thought it was oil or something), besides waves sucked big time, and I had to paddle a lot to get to the break point. Awful beach. I recommend Grumari ten thousand times, waves weren't that good either, but the place is just awesome.

the barra beach is the best in rio ,you can surf a have safe good time,no crime, only nice girls, and sometimes waves that rocks tha house!!

no sharks, sometimes litter in the water, but that is human fault, not nature, almost a clean an tasty water!

I LOVE RIO! i`ve seen much of the world, but rio rocks day and night!

My favorite
I live 2 minutes walk away from a place right between posto 5 and 6... perfect spot. Just came back from a awesome surf session, almost 1.5m with 2 meters sets. Barra actually breaks around 300 days per year ( im a local and i surf almost daily ) and the other locals are nice (im not) -jk- many people around but the beach extends for around 11km so lots of space. Find the right spot and do your thing. Probably one of the most consistent surf in the world. Surrounded by a very rich neighborhood and is the safest beach in rio. Problem is waves arent very tubular so a barrel is rare in barra, but the waves are good for begginers... though epic days can beat pipeline...
thx... and laidehs, call me if you come here....

nice waves in Barra!!!
you can find some nice waves at barra, sometimes the waves don't open up well, but its pretty consistent , very hard to go there and find no waves at all. Best place is Posto 4 until the Pier. Before that the waves are smaller and the quality isn't the same! I live at Rio and prefer going to Barra rather than Prainha, which has better waves but is veeeery crowded!

Surf in Barra
I live in Niterói and always go surf at Barra. It´s true that it´s not the best wave in Rio, but worth a lot. It´s consistent and free from crowd (the beach is too long and have lots of room). Don´t have the crowds and the localism of Arpoador, and it´s closer and more empty than Prainha.
But my preference is for Itacoatiara, Niterói, the Brazilian Pipeline!!! haiehahehaehahe

Decent surf
I think Meio da Barra is Rio´s best cost/benefit surfing. Its not the best wave in Rio (Prainha, Macumba, Arpoador on avg being the best spots). But it is consistent, a short drive from Zona Sul, crowds are ok and usualy holds up nicely up to to 4/5ft. The drawback is that wind picks up real strong after 10/11 am, messing with the surf. Get up early and find good surf.
