Great for longboards, shortboarders may have a harder time but it is still fun for all surfer types.. Local surf shops are more than willing to help with any questions...
Atmosphere
The area is great, the locals are decent.. Steer clear of sweetwater surf shop.. Those guys like to rip off anyone they get a chance to.. The best time to go is about 3 hours after low tide.. Most of the time this is extremely early in the morning but the rewards are worth it...
General
Wrightsville beach is a great spot for all surfers to just come and have fun..

avoid the pier - I love this place! It's where I learned to surf. I'm no local, but I still call that break home. The lifeguards can be annoying when they're enforcing the surf zones (I think after 10 am), but get out early to avoid that hassle as well as the crowds. If it's too crowded by the pier, I usually walk over to the pier side of the Masonboro Inlet The rides are shorter and it's a bit of a gamble, but hey, at least I'm by my self

sucks - If you've ever surfed a decent place you'll know wb sucks. Sure it might get good 10 days out of the year but each of those days is crowded beyond belief. College kooks and wannabe pros flock to here in the summer to get knee-waist high slop. The pics are very misleading. OBX are better but getting crowded too.

Wrightsville - First the good; beautiful beach, relatively clear water, mostly friendly vibes, and a day at the beach is always better than a day at work. Having said that, this is not a surf destination, nor is ANY other beach break in North Carolina with the possible exception of the OBX. Mostly marginal beach break type waves breaking close to shore, producing very short rides. The promise of a hurricane swell is both a curse and a blessing. You pray the conditions come together and that it gets just close enough to produce swell and not loss of property or life.
