the truth about sharks, bears, etc. oh my
In November 1993 before "Al Gore invented the internet", I went out to Neah Bay with a friend looking for surf spots. We ended up at Mukkaw bay - I wish we would have turned right on 112 instead of left.

I read all 11 pages of comments about this spot. Here's my 2 worthless cents:

First, there has only been 1 recorded shark attack in Washington in the last 1000 years. You are 30 times more likely to get hit by lightning than to be attacked by a shark. You have a better chance of dying in a car wreck on 101 on the way to "The Dump". Here is proof: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/statistics/GAttack/mapusa.htm. I'm still going to strap my hunting knife to my waist just to make myself feel better. 8" knife straight through the sharks head while my leg is in his mouth is going to be a worse day for that shark.

Ok, now on to Bears and cougars. I had a bear problem on my property this summer because I was keeping my garbage on top of my roof like a hick. I saw the bear on my deck, I opened the door and it bolted as fast as cat (jumped probably 15+ feet off my deck). A fish and wild life officer came and put a trap up. The bear didn't show up after that. Any way I talked to him a lot about bears and cougars. Bears think of us as another bear; as long as we are respectful to them and their space they won't bother us. Cougars are curious, you don't want to set off their hunting senses so don't run quickly or ride a mountain bike. Walk with a friend and make a lot of noise.

Now onto people who say they go out there and the waves suck. Check MSW before you go - boy that was easy.

Now onto garbage, locals, long hike, etc. If I ever go to "The dump" (which won't be any time soon), I will boat in, and anchor a good ways out. Then my Samoan body guard will drive the kodiak drug runner raft to get to the surf break like they do in Indo on one of those surf charter trips and skip all of that mess. AND - if any crew or the so called "The Keepers" have a problem with me they will have a problem with my Kodiak raft driver who will be packin. LOL! Suckers! Now I can finally surf this spot in peace!

this is fun spot
one of my favorite spots. locals are really friendly and the water is really warm for WA. Being from Orange County, it was a blessing to find a spot every bit as fun as Trestles, but without all the people.

Nobody owns nothin
Localism in surfing is lame. These guys can't survive anywhere else in life so they try to control their pitiful little shitholes like the Crips in the hood, with one exception, they got nothing to back it up with. Try your lame BS in an urban setting and it'll get handed to you friend. So knock it off before your run into someone like ME in the water. I'll cure you of this affliction more effectively than you might want,,,,bro

WA locals chill the F out
I hate people who think they own the ocean. Should surfers be only allowed to surf in the town they were born in? I'm from Hawaii and love to surf. Now that I live in Washington, do I have to give up the sport? If that's the case then the same rules should apply to everyone. People who live around this spot should not be allow to surf any other break in Washington. And if they wanna take a surf trip to Cali, Oregon, Hawaii, Florida, N.C. Australia, whereever, they need to get their ass stomps. Not many people surf (regularly) in Washington to begin with. Try surfing in a line up with 40 people everyday like we do in Hawaii then complain. Wahhhh we gotta share a spot with 2 more nonlocals now there's 5 of us in the lineup. Geez cry me a river.

I wouldn't worry too much...
Been surf'n out here for a handful of years now and been to most of the good spots and the ideal swells are few and far between. Why are so many guys acting like this is V-land. Protecting our invironment is one thing but trying to run off all the non-existant travelers jumping in their cars and hussling out here to try to find one of the swells in frigid temperatures is beneath any real surfer and a waste of time. There's a few people but get real! Most of the people just end up at Hobuck anyway.

Are you talking about the "Keepers"? Somebody told me it's a surf gang. Is this true?

comment by Jeff , 2008-01-15 19:52:22

Actually...
Actually...there is a crew, and everybody knows it. And leaving your car anywhere in this area is a sure way to have it vandalized. The crew will make sure of it. I've seen it happen. It doesn't matter if your car is shiny and new or not. The crew knows which vehicles belong to their guys. The crew are from all over the state, but have been surfing the area for years. They run everything out on the Strait. Anyone who's spent some time out here knows who they are.
