delta or kirra???? Thanks for the reply. I concur that an unrestrained flow will probabaly cancel out the waves (by creating a huge shallow delta), however it could benefit Pt. Angeles by filling it in with a sandbar ala Kirra. Then again, like you said, even less swell gets in there. Is it true that Elwha is packed on most days? Since I moved away i heard its become a freakin zoo.... But even in the heart of winter? Hard for me to imagine ...

Whether the release from the dam is detrimental or not to the break will depend on the flow that is allowed into the E. It is logical to assume that an extremely high flow into the rivermouth will have a negative effect, possibly for an extended period of time...maybe years. If it is a controlled flow over a metered amount of time, it may create a hell of a sandbar. The biggest problem is, even if a fantastic sandbar is created, the E still needs a swell. Like most breaks on the Strait, the E is still pretty much a "novelty" break (though not as much as Ebey). In other words, just because a bar exists, doesn't necessarily mean a break will be good or consistent.

confused... I am confused then. I thought some major studies were undertaken, along with years of meetings about this, and in the end a determination was made that by removing the dam, the benefit to the local ecosystem (such as fish stocks - also a resource) would be so great that it would actually outweigh the loss of the hydro-electric power the dam provided. Otherwise why would they remove it at all? I would imagine the river's ecosystem has been negatively impacted by the dam to a degree that greatly exceeds other dam impacts in the nation, as this will be a first in US history - to remove a dam as a 'restorative' effort. But is this just a misguided endeavour by a handful of well-meaning but regressive environmentalists? I really have no idea, and welcome any comments here from impartial parties in-the-know. Thanks.

why is it awesome they are removing a cheap clean source of power?

Yo Dudes... Hey strait trippers and rippers, what is yer opinion on how when they open the Elwha river (take down the dam) later this year and especially next year and 2011, do you think it will make the wave better or worse? I think all that extra sand could turn Point Angeles into a reverse Kirra, however too much sand creates a delta/washout situtation sometimes for a rivermouth... So the Elwha proper, its hard to say what will happen. Any expert eco types out there want to weigh in? Will there be dredging sandbar tubes, or a Mississippi delta type situation of flat disorganized water cancelling out the breakers? I reckon it was good before the dam so should hold true in the future... Regardless, it's awesome they are taking down the dam - a first in US history, and an environmental REPARATION! YEAh! Ya'll want to read a gripping, hardcore and epic novel? Check out my new book , The Somali Pirate, out this August on Amazon! Don't miss it - it's really sick!

WhiteMike I'm coming down alone to surf there. I'm a red belt and I'm hoping a local or locals try and intimidate me. Not because I'm looking for trouble, just want to end localism, one broken arm at a time.

New Year's 1987 Surfed the Elwah River mouth once with a buddy the day before New Year's Eve 1987. Incredible! Probably 12-15 ft on open ocean and clean six-footers at the break. No one else out. Kind of sad to read about the hysterical territorialism there now. Feel lucky to have surfed and lived at a time when soul surfers were the rule.

to 'weak'... Why are you surfing the net, looking at a surf site, and looking at this spot? Why can you do it, but other people cant? Have you ever once been curious about a surf spot, then looked it up here, or elsewhere on the Internet? If so, whats your problem with others doing it?

weak go find it yourselves. Why do you all have to post the secrets that other people have worked years to figure out. GIving away spot locations and tips is lame. Get out there and do your own discovering. Just cause you can surf the web, doesnt mean you can actually surf.
