You must take a ferry over but it is a private community. But you can take on to the community beside it and walk up the beach. The feirres depart from ocean bay park on the great south bay. Its truely worth it. Iv been to costa ric and up and down the sea board and it is by far my favorit. To be warned u bike on the island but its very short. Its a well kept secret. Not many people know about it. There are no surfers in the community so it wont be crowded. pow surf - the best time to catch surf out on fire island is obviously when there is a swell but if you get it striaght on you will get huge walls that dump top to bottom. i have surfed all over the world and some of the best waves i ever caught were on fire island outer bars. what you need to do is catch it with a easterly swell. track the hurricanes coming up the gulf stream or watch for nor easters and jump on it when they are due east. if you get this swell direction the lefts that line up are epic, absolutely epic and yes no crowds ever. peak after peak with nobody on it. take the ferry over to sailor's haven or take your boat across and throw anchor on teh bayside of the sunken forest

Get ur paddle on. - Waves breaking on outer bar are like 200yds out. Be prepared to get your paddle on. For this reason I think this is kind of a tough spot for a beginner without any friends who surf. As I meet the description above if anyone in the area is looking for someone to surf with please respond.

P.O.W. is a town full of w.a.s.p.'s who frown on surfers. - I used to live in the neighboring town of Ocean Bay Park. I lived there for 6 yrs. " year round " Ive never seen it worth surfing in point o woods, it was just on my way to sunken forest via bike & I used to have to sneak in past someone who oppened the gate, or some of the contractors made duplicates of the key. Anyway, there is a stupid law in p.o.w. that says you cant ride bike carrying a surfboard & the security guards & residents didint have a problem yelling at you when you were riding by. That place sucks.
