Use the Jetty to your advantage to paddle out. Parking on street, No meters!, or in public lot. West of the Jetty is more beachbreak with Both Rights and Lefts. watch out for old submerged wooden groins- nasty sharp pointy things.
Overview
Atmosphere
This is by no stretch of the imagination a Secret Spot. It can and does get CROWDED during the summer. More than likely you will not get a wave to yourself at the main peak. Try moving a bit west to catch the waves that swing a bit wide, or east to the next jetty (The Box).
General
On a good day this place can go off bigtime and everyone knows it. Even on an off day it can be fun. Even as crowded as it gets, generally speaking, If you leave the attitude home, you can have a good time.
been bodyboarding rockaway my whole life
first of all-i can pullm ariels-better than most surfers i see out there-anyways-there are certain spots further west that have sand bars and the waves are hollow-no joke-north wind-south sewll and you got decent tubes-i will not say where exactly-go hunt it out guys-also -when i was out at 92nd last summer-there were alot of begginers surfing there-i mean you gotta learn sometimes but-lastly i never dropin on a wave-no one should-but if a surfer tries to hit me in the head with his skegs-i have a knife in my fin-joke-im jsut this violence is uncomfortable-

Rockaway
Inconsistent, but not bad for NYC beach. Don't even go between memorial and labor day -- crowded and restricted to surf-designated areas. Things get interestng after labor day. sandbars work up and down the beach and you can pick your spot. 92nd St jetty is the better wave (left) in the area, but locals are bunch of goons. Coupla guys are cool and they rip. The rest are a bunch of fat, bitter longboarders who haven't made a turn in years. They'll just use their longboards to gain an advantage on the shortboarders. drop in on them without hesitation. Or go to the next jetty (the box) where it gets shallow and hollow and far less crowded. Go surf and give a wave.

Rockaway used to be great...
I grew up in Rockaway, I love living on the Rockaway Peninsula, and we used to have good surfing on 92nd and 84th until it became severely overcrowded with people from other parts of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan who think that they own the place, and give verbal "beatdowns" to Rockaway lifers, like myself, and other recreational surfers who come to enjoy everything Rockaway has to offer. What is THAT about? You have got to be kidding. Please take yourself and your crappy attitude back to your borough and stay there. Or, better yet, go to New Jersey. I don't know why Rockaway attracts the lowest class of surfers, but it does, and it's very insulting. You know that your attitudes would never hold up in places populated with mostly wealthy people, so you come here and act like animals! I'd like to bring back old school Rockaway!!!
