Buy that house - Great idea!, howabout you buy the house and I'll be your permanent house sitter! I can introduce you to the locals and show you the ins and outs of the west side. Times are hard and I need a place to stay!

Moving to Makaha? - I am thinking about purchasing property in Makaha. I am from California and travel extensively in the third world. I travel alone, show respect and usually get respect in return. I would not live full time in Makaha; just visit now and then to surf and enjoy the islands. Can someone tell me honestly how I would be treated there if I played by all the rules and brought a good attitude? What is the vibe like out there right now? What about crime? I don't have a problem with petty theft but violent crime freaks me out.

Legendary Makaha - I am just back from a trip to Oahu and surfed Makaha twice since the West Side was kicking. Caught great surf (8' - 12' faces) and the locals were very cool. Bruce, you're one wave-catching machine! A visitor just needs to bring Aloha and show respect in order to get anything in return. Just be careful of the occasional snakes and kooks, usually on the inside sections.

True aloha - I go to Hawaii about every other year, and I always go to Makaha. I know there are stories about break-ins, angry locals etc. But I just haven't seen them. True, I go solo or with one other person. If you're there at the crack of dawn, you'll have an hour or so of uncrowded waves. By 10 a.m. it's packed with all sorts of people. Just watch out for the outriggers...they always have the right of way. It's not really a beginner spot, just b/c of the crowds. You really do need to know how to turn/get out of the way/ride double on a wave...so beautiful tho.

Lived in the apartment building on the point for two years - Makaha is a wonderful place. Brian K, and others, made me feel more then at home. Most of the problems I had were local punks from town. Didn't know it, but a guy named Bruce Desoto was very kind to me, and that works for a reason...Thank you Mr. Desoto...

The Point is incredible when it goes off. I missed an open ocean, Greg Noll size wave, on a 10'8" rhino chaser. Couldn't get over the ledge...I did catch 4 huge point waves, IIRC. If you take off pretty far back, and the bowl comes up, and it's the wrong wave, you are in real bad trouble. You either pull into the barrel, and pray, or try and straighten off, and get the double slam from the bowl, and the wall you are riding, as both go top to bottom on your head. When this place gets big, it turns from a fun wave, into a world class big wave.

I just wished it was the same size as the north shore, all the time...

Drain Man making giant sucking sounds - Sunny Garcia has achieved more in his lifetime than you ever will in your dreams. The truth is that we will all grow older in time, but carry with us everything earned in life. He could probably tell that you are a loser, so nomo authgraph fo you. Too bad eh. The first post here pays tribute to lovely Rell Sunn, then YOU anden. Learn to show locals and Their beaches respect, then maybe some come back to you.
