Makena Access
drive past kihei.'Big Beach' they call it -- a huge stretch of coarse golden sand without a house or hotel for miles. Maui citizens campaigned successfully to preserve this beloved beach from development. At the right-hand end of the beach rises the beautiful hill called Pu'u Ola'i, a perfect cinder cone. A climb over the rocks at this end leads to 'Little Beach,' where the (technically illegal) clothing-optional attitude prevails.

Spinal Injuries
This beach along with Sandy Beach (Oahu) have the most severe spinal injuries in the world. I am not joking. I have seen two accidents where people got paralyzed for EVER! Watch out! I am for real. In addition, there have been many shark attacks all along this beach. I dive a lot around here and i have seen many many TIGERS.

10 foot barrels
I grew up on Maui and hit this spot a lot with my surfboard. It's mostly shorebreaks for bodysurfing and boogie boards, but in the right conditions, you can surf the left reef when you don't feel like driving to dumps or La Perouse.During a storm, this kicks on Sandy Beach.
