Mahai'ula Bay Access |
| |
Off of Hwy 19 exit between mile markers 90-91. I think there is a sign that says Kona Coast State Park. The road is relly bad, but you DO NOT need a 4x4. I would suggest a truck or SUV though. However, I have seen rental cars drive it. It is about a 10 min drive to the end. If you are going to surf, DO NOT go to the Boat Launch, stop about 100yards before the boat launch parking lot and take the lava trail to the right. This trail will come out at the North end of the beach near the old Magoon house (abandoned, big red house). You can paddle right out to the point from here. BE WARNED, it is a good 10 min paddle out and at least 15 min paddle in!! Oh, the gate off the Hwy opens at 9am. |

Additional Surfing Infos |
| | The paddle is a killer, but well worth it once you get out and take a 5 min breather before surfing! This is 90% a right break, if you are crazy, you can shoot it left but it is short due to the rocks. You may want to paddle out from the south end of the beach parallel to the sand from the south point, it may be easier, than straight out, but the distance is the same.

Overview |

Atmosphere |
This wave is awesome!!!! This is by far my favorite place on the whole island to surf! It is wide open, mostly sandy bottom and even if crowded (10-15 surfers) there is plenty of room. On a big day this place rocks!!! Great right break with plenty of room. However, this is a cloud break not a hollow wave..not very steep. If the outside is too big for you, you can hang on the inside and get some great left overs. Body boards and all surfers welcome. The last day I was out was Christmas Eve 2001, it was 8-10 ft and sweet! I had the great opportunity to surf with Jerry Seinfeld who was staying at the 4 Seasons Resort and was out with a local surfing guide. I cannot say enough about this place, it is great....on 12/26, the surf was 12ft on the outside. Once out there it can be deceiving, the sweels look like they are 20ft+, but mellow out before they break....good stuff!! |
