Leo Carillo
Laughing at the Leo comment, too funny. I'm from Malibu, surfed Hunnels on my only trip to Big I in '85 when I was 14, was only waist high but I had the rights all to myself and really dug the wave, would have liked to surf it a little bigger, beautiful spot as are all spots I saw/surfed in Kona, I remember it being ultra shallow. I visited my friends in Hilo, we drove down to Drains where I got my ass handed to me before I made it to the lineup...by the waves not the locs, they were cool. I wanted to come back and give it another try, was bummed when it got buried. Left Points was sweet too, Kaimu...that whole area was paradise. I hear all those spots got toasted. What a shame.

Whoever wrote that honls is overrated should shutup bacause they don't even know what their talking about..
Probably don't even know where the place is. I surfed this place in the summer time, low tide, and barreling conditions.. This was my first time surfing this place originally from the east side, and got slammed on the reef.My board has a couple of dings on it and in half an hour two other guys broke their boards, some hitting the reef as well. Honl's has now become one of my favorite places to surf... Back to the idiot, this ones for you!
Why would you leave a message like that saying something ir overrated... Your definitely not a local and have no right to say that.. "Anyway, watch out and respect the locals" "Don't drop in andn think your a ripper"

Holy smoly, I was beat up by that guy Nick that was mentioned in an earlier statement. I wonder if it was the same guy, he was tough. Just be respectful of the locals, and you should be fine. I paddled for a wave that Nick was paddling for, and snuck around behind him and tried to call him off the wave. He told me to go in and I invited him to follow me. He wasn’t that big, but he spanked me non-the–less. Be careful, and show respect!!!!!!!!

why send out the invitations?
Kona boys: Remember the mornings/afternoons you got with only a handful of other local homies, getting pitted and hitting sections? If you guys keep handing out invitations to the world (especially Californians) to come surf your waves, believe me they will come. But they don't always come with RESPECT/Edicate, and they don't always remember to go HOME. So next time you get snaked by a hoale, blame yourself. Let the "core" riders find our spots, if they show respect, then cool. Share the beauty of Honol's epicness with them. If not, teach them a lesson in the art of the "FALSE CRACK", and send em back to Leo Carrillo.

careful at low tide
Got really slammed there last January during low tide. Had surfed it dozens of times before but somehow got suckered onto the reef and paid for it. Be very, very careful, even during high tide. Still very shallow and dangerous.

Close out?
I rode Hunnell's(named after the Hunnell family that used to live there) in the mid 80's at double to triple overhead. Hard to measure true size cause there were only 8 of us out and about 100 on the beach. Of the 8 dudes out, I never saw anyone drop in on a big set wave. We all caught the 'tweeners cause it was hairy and we were all scared. Way more hairy than 20' Sunset witha west wind. Not one wave came close to closing out. I'll say this...it was beyond hollow. It was a WSW swell of mega proportions. It was so big "A" Bay up north closed out at quadruple+++ overhead. Waves there were washing into the pond mauka of the beach. Hunnell's needs size. The left on a south with size is a barrel and so is the right. Most days it's crowded and funky but don't miss it on the big south. Brings your balls but leave your 6'2" at home. You'll need a real board.

overrated
Honls is fun but not as "world-class" as described here. usually not even close to hollow, often mushy waves that are really tide sensitive. when it gets real big Honls usually starts closing out...
