Tigers
The reason the sharks started showing up is because a whale got beached in the early 2000's north of here closer to kawaihae, and attracted about 20 something sharks. The news showed them riding the surf in and eating off the whale while it was still alive. Anyway, once they were able to remove the leftovers of the whale, they buried it with a backhoe in the rocks above the southern point of Hapuna. And of course, it rained and leaked all that tasty-to-sharks whale juices into the waters below. You can probably google it...they had the entire north kona coast shut down for about a week because of this.

Shorebreak can be a beast
Ive bodyboarded here since 1992 and although for about 350 days of the year its a 1 foot mushy piece of shit wave, for about random weeks of a western swell, its fucking awesome! Last good sweel I remember was in jan. 07. For about 3 days it was a solid 8-14 foot face. I surfed there from dawn to dusk 3 days in a row. Great times!

Hapuna can be a very heavy shorebreak, not quite as powerful as Sandys, but pretty damn close. Far left side by the cliff can be nice, especially when a wave hits against the left cliff, bounces off and merges into another wave... very fun sideways mutant wave.
This place is rarely epic, but when you hear that a hude western swell is hitting, do whatever you can to go... call in sick, ditch school, whatever lol.

hapuna
the point does go off over a very shallow sharp reef, i paddled out from the beachbreak and saw a huge fning shark. Camped out one night and saw some of the best waves ever while I lived there for one year, also close by on a big swell is a hidden spot that holds a large swell, better be good though, or you will get cut to pieces.
