I'm from St. George Island, and this page is totally raggin on the island... Beginners wave? It's pretty standard... Cape San Blass just around the corner is steeper and faster when in decent size, but when St George Island gets good, it's usually DAMN good, and when it's sloppy, its fairly mellow most of the time, but not always.... And most of the time it's fairly consistent, at least with small waves, on some "flat" days. But i've lived in panama city beach and the island, and over all, i have to say that between the two, the cleaner waves ive ever seen have been on the island. But PCB gets better surf, and cleaner most of the time, but the Island gets more surf and better surf than this site gives it credit for. There's a "secret spot" (yeah, i named that one, but everyone caught on, so hey...)heading out toward the state park which is breaking before anything on small days. As for best and cleanest spot, "first peak" in the plantation (which you cant get into unless u have a pass)DAMN good little wave. And it's not a bad paddle across the cut to little St. George where the surf fires all the time. If ya ever visit, you should take a boat out there.

sharks in the gulf coast
i have lived close to st. george island for many years now and just wanted to answer the shark questions. yes. all year round there is a large population of bull sharks and sometimes a few tigers. Per capita not too many people are bitten but i have seen a few people including surfers get taste tested. the water on a good day is clear but often is quite murky. if you plan to spend time in the water best just avoind sitting in schools of fish on the bars and when fishing don't keep bait in your pockets

Are there sharks all the time?
My family and I are vacationing at SGI this July. We all love to get to the sandbars. Should these be avoided because of sharks? Are there sharks all the time and is the water clear?

thanks

State Park
Going back down for another trip in Aug. Avoid the state park, the beaches are nice but the swells stink, especially in spring, like 2-3 feet tops. The western end near the jetty is best if you can get there. If you've got a buddy, make the 7 mile hike from the public access point right before the gate. It's worth it. I've never had any problem with the sharks. The fishing by the jetty is fantastic, too. See y'all in August!!

Muddy/Sharky
Yeah, you won't find 100 days of surf here, and when there is surf it's chocolate milk and can get toothy. Though, like some of the others on this post...I love this place (S-turns, 300 Ocean mile, the Cut) and the vibe everyone shows. Hey Litchfield and Dr. Bob see you guys out in the water!

100 day per year.
News Flash! SGI does not break 100 days per year, unless you are on a completely different size scale. Like anywhere else, it may have its days, but not 100 of them. SGI is my primary spot, and I am there on about every southeaster, and I do not recall 100 trips to surf SGI last year. Besides, I heard that there are, like, 20 foot leopard sharks there...

St. George turns offshore 1st.
St. George may not be the best break around but you can bet that the people who surf there bring a good vibe. St. George is the only beach in the panhandle that faces SSE. When a front rolls through and the wind turns west, St. George is offshore. Surfers in the Tallahasse area have many choices on places to see depending on swell angles and winds. Within 45 minutes, we can surf an east windswell at SGI, surf nearly due west at the Cape, or if its too big and nasty can head for Mexico Beach. All three of these beaches are the last of its kind.
