this wave is not very good - kinda rocky bottom, not reef rocky just random boulders rocky so the waves are not that great here. maybe 5 days per season there will be "OK" waves but if this place is breaking then there are surely epic waves within 30 mins of here. and you usually have a bunch of SB local dudes surfing here which is just a super treat.
Walking Down The Wrong Lane.. - Don't let the beauty of the place fool you. I had the worst "localism" experience of my 25 years of surfing all over the world, including Hawaii and The Ranch. There are some serious criminal low lifes who live near Mesa Lane, SB. Twenty years ago they stole my roommates classic car, in perfect condition, and joy rode it up in the mountains damaging a perfect car that was irreplacable. Or course, the police were clueless and didn't want to fingerprint the car or ask around the neighborhood if anyone saw anything. What is it about the Mesa? Do the people in breed there? I lived there. I was their neighbor and they did this to me. It is one beautiful place with some serioulsy ugly people.
Real Mesa Rat - I live on the mesa, i am a mesa rat. so dont come here if the surf sucks and then write about how much its sucks when the mesa is only rated at 1 star.
this spot rules...whatever that means - Another santa barabara over rated spot - I lived on the mesa for a couple years and only surfed here 2 or 3 times - its just not a good surf spot. there used to be a ton of kelp in the line up, not sure how it is anymore. and the waves didnt really line up that great. Cant even remeber if I ever had a good session at this place. Skip it unless you just want to hang on the beach and check out a bunch of chicks when the weather is hot.
the lane! - Oh what sweet memories, learned to surf at this spot. Its a 3 on the 1 to 10 scale so just leave it for the locals getting a little after work and the familys and new local kids graduating up from the pit and leads. ROFL at anyone that actualy makes this a destination. Though if you do just paddle out and tell everyone how far you have come to surf it and all will get a good laugh. best way to break the ice.
mesa surf sucks - The mesa sucks most of the time, so lits best left to the locals that need a place to get wet without driving. outsiders visiting is ok but don't make it your"new spot and don't amp out in the water and be a wave hog. take turns like your mommy taught you City College stu's.
SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE YESTERDAY - WHEN THERE WAS NO EASY ACCESS & IT WAS ALL LOCAL, WAS THE TIME THE OUTSIDE KELP WAS THICK, AND THE INSIDE WAS GLASS ON ANY WIND SWELL. LOTS OF CHANGE IN 40 YEARS. IN ADDITION, LOTS OF CROWDS……….

- Whoa!! Watch out for those tough SB Mesa Rats!! I mean they own this place, and that's good because anyone who's down with the Mesa knows the Lane can get HEAVY!!! Well, heavy with seaweed that is. And heavy when you have to walk back up those stairs after drinking beer all day because it's not even big enough to warrant paddling out. The little point immediately south can get decent (called ledges, can have a quick tube ride on the right but breaks over a rock shelf). Other than that this place is just another mellow SB beach break, constantly blocked from swells due to the islands with only the biggest swells punching through. But in all seriousness, do watch out for Los Piratos; those guys are for real with their eye patches, peg legs and parrots.
lots - Yes there are many sharks there. Not safe most of the year because of sharks.
Jack - Are there SHARKS near there ?
