This spot is tide sensitive and the has changing bottom formations. If everything comes together its a pretty fun place. Other than that it usually closes out

It's Like This
Look, this place is very inconsistent, and it hardly ever forms and breaks correctly w/o closing out. But at the same time there is some similarities between it and its cousin to the south, the San Diego rivemouth aka Avalanche. First of all they both are rivermouths they both are dog beaches during the winter and they both can have nice hollow sections. Now thats where the similarities end. Avalanche is consistent with at least some kind of manageable surf almost all through out the year, Del Mar Rivermouth on the other hand basically is crap most of the time. But on occasion it gets really good. For example remember this last spring when we had several abnormally large swells come through. Well on one occasion in early May when we had a swell coming from the West North West I remember driving past at about mid tide and seeing head high and a quarter surf that was just peeling perfectly. There was only four guys out and it was freaking awesome. This is not the first time that I have seen this happen there either. In my own personal opinion I think this place if given the right conditions can hold way bigger surf than Avalanches. But at the same time the Del Mar rivermouth goes off when most other places are twice as good as it anyways. So it's kinda pointless unless you want to have a nice big wave completely by yourself and eat dog shit while you surf.

Sting Rays
I was stung by a Sting Ray here. Since then, I hiked the river and near the railroad tracks I saw a bunch of rays. It looks like they breed there and then go hang out in the sand bars in the surf. So make sure you shuffle your feet on the way out to let them know you're coming. Otherwise, you may pay the price.

Same sorta thing as avalanche, but the difference is that avalanche is good.
