Try to avoid high tide as the beach dump can be very nasty and for anyone who is not familiar with this kind of set up; getting back is often harder than getting out. Keep checking position as powerful side currents can drag you near dangerous groynes before you realise!!
Overview
Atmosphere
When it's good (not very often) it can be pretty crowded, but the crowd is always friendly - as everyone is stoked to be getting a half decent wave!! Watch the dumping shorebreak - I'm sure it has the capability to break bones (and throw pebbles down your wetsuit!!)
General
Only worth visiting if you live in South East England - not classic - conditions are generally onshore and mushy - but on the right day can be pretty good, however conditions are rarely perfect - and when they are its generally freezing and mid-winter...

Iv just started learning to surf and have been to East Wittering a few times. It's a lovely beach, waves can be very sloppy...but yesterday took a trip down there, it was actually very clean waves 2-6ft! Only problem was period between breaks was very long.I'd recommend Wittering, but make sure surfs good enough before bothering.

First place I surfed was East Wittering. Was having a great time until one evening in the pub the locals threw our coats on the floor with a 'we dont like strangers round our way' feel about it. Shame as everyone else had been so nice. Shore Watersports is excellent - friendly helpful staff. My advice is good place to learn but dont go out in the evening - especially if you are keen on your clothes.
