Strathy - Me and my brother just started surfing about a year ago, and we've lived up from Strathy beach all our lives. We're only making proper use of it now after about 15 years! But it's a great break for beginners, the bay is really wide so that even though there are rips now and again you never really get into great danger of drifting away, and they just set up a life-ring stand thingy on the shore, in case you're unconvinced! Sometimes we go down and find that there are a couple of other surfers out catching bigger stuff, so I think it would appeal to more advanced surfers when the surf is big. We also surf at Melvich a couple of miles towards Thurso, and it seems that when the surf is good at Strathy, it isn't always so great at Melvich, and vice versa. It's a smaller bay but maybe better on bigger days. I'd advise thick wetsuits all year round if you're surfing at Strathy or anywhere in Scotland, never mind the North Coast!

Strathy - Surfed at Strathy September 2004, beautiful spot and empty! SW Gale kept surf small but it was still fun and quite punchy. 5/3 Suit and boots were enough to keep warm.
