You can go to the campside in Melvich to ask them the way. Otherwise: follow the marks to Melvich beach you can park your car near it and then it's about 5 minutes walking. If you want to walk it from the campside (like we did) it's a 20 minutes walk.
When you're unlucky the swell is so big that it gets very hard to paddle trough the waves so it's better to go in the summer because then there isn't so much whitewater. The crowd is really small most of the holidays there are 5 people a day. You're gonna need a good wetsuit because it's very cold. The wave type are different every hour so when you're surfing there for 6 hours you need to switch places 5 times or more. Try it near the rivermouth if you want to have a long ride, and if you want big waves go to the middle of the beach. It's very surfable when there is a depression between Iceland and Norway. The swell will make good waves then.

Atmosphere
It's a beautiful place, we where there for 6 days and I saw surfers from many different countries coming there for a day. The scottish are very nice and helpful (we borrowed the owner of the campings bike for free!). There is a pub where you can drink and eat next to the camping. We had a great time surfing here. The surfshop in Thurso is about 30 minutes from Melvich.
The experienced sufers will have a good time here as well because the bay always has 3 different breaks and the waves are big most of the time.
General
I think it's better than thurso and it looks much better as well. Thurso is a very ugly city so i advise you try the spots outside of Thurso.

well i have to say iv surfed melvich loads of times on its best days but altough it looks pretty when its workin (not very good pics by the way) but i wouldnt say its newhere near worldclass again this term has been thrown around a bit

its me on pic real good surfing world championships been there but nobody comes there is urded there for a week i saw 2 other people surfing the rest i was alone with a friend
