'Big Day at Saunton' - 2004-02-09
If any of you out there are wondering if the guys are surfing from left-to-right or right-to-left in the picture, then I`ll reveal all! This photo was shot from the headland point north of the bay, so in-fact they`re surfing from, yes you`ve got-it, right-to-left! Sorry for all this useless 'cods-wallop'.

I cant believe some of the comments on here. Firstly, let me tell ya, i am a 36 year old 'towny' from the midlands. A longboarder (and still class myself a beginner), a BMW driver, and slightly overweight. Probably the sort of person you 'locals' fuckin hate.

Well, fuck ya. I having been stayin in Croyde and surfing mainly Saunton for 4 years and manage about 7 weekends a year. I enjoy the 'weak' Saunton wave, love having a beer in Thatch and perusing the shops in Braunton. Generally have a great weekend, and probably between the 3/4 of us, spend at least £800 in your local shops, pubs etc. I think you will find that without friendly tourists like us, u would be fucked. Your hard working parents (im assuming ur all under 18 by the comments), wouldnt be able to survive without it and u would end up living in Bristol or Exeter. Joy.

But having said all that, there is no excuse for bad manners or bad surf etiquette. Unfortunately when anything gets popular, ur lumbered with the assholes as well as decent people. Life.

I would say that I have never had any grief from locals at Saunton, Croyde or Putts. I have found the locals generally keep themselves to themselves but not impolite.

Longboarders from Brum? Thats me and as you don't get much of a swell on the Dudley and Birmingham canal and Saunton is the nearest longboarders beach I tend to go there. So get off your high horse and let people who don't live by the ocean enjoy it too. And if you think the waves are shit go elsewhere and let the beginners, intermediates and the kayakers have the free reign. (BTW I do follow wave etiquette and if I see someone drop in - even a beginner - I would have a polite word)

OYSTER FALLS
Just a note about oyster falls be it comparable to a big wave spot or not, in fact it breaks probably a few times a year, normally on a very big day when croyde is maxed out, but it normally can be seen starting to break when croyde is about 8 foot ish and just about still surfable. The view from outside at croyde on one of these days is amazing and certainly gets alot of attention from the walkers on baggy point. Its being surfed more and more now and so we are learning more about it. I think size wise it is obviously a bit of a beast as far as north coast waves go, but the wave quality will always be lacking as the sandbank out there struggles to deal with the amount of water bashing into it. I would think that there are more intense big waves to surf but if your a fan of a big paddle and a kicking go for it, if not get jet skis!!!

oyster falls
checked out the link, but there wasn't much to be seen. i suspect this is as overhyped as the cribber. i've surfed both at 4 times overhead plus, and they're both mushy and in too much water to ever get over the windchop and rips. the comparisons to hawaii are ridiculous for both spots, and there are a bunch of spots around the south west that are surfable in that range. people just don't see it because they don't look hard enough. this is the wrong country to be looking for serious big waves. even uluwatu, which is not known as a big wave spot, is easier to surf at 15 foot than these places or, say, milook are at 10 foot, because the setup can cope with the swell far better, and the swells are cleaner in the first place. all that continental shelf we have to deal with causes too much interference in even our cleanest swells to produce a smooth drop, which is pretty much the first prerequisite for a good big wave spot.

oops
A bit of advice for anyone with the same idea as i foolishly had, tried for a shortcut outback earlier this year by parking on roadside and walking down cliffs and across rocks. Nearly lost my board and fell down a huge hole between sets, surf seems twice the size when you get down there and i think i could have easily come a cropper. Dont try it.

saunton sucks
Saunton is so weak and gutless, you only get midlife crisis longboarders from Brum who surf there who need a boat to paddle into waves. Don't even bother.

Oyster Falls
Ahh yes the legendary Oyster Falls... very little is known about it actually as it only breaks about once every couple of years, and is also pretty sketchy with loads of rocks sticking up all over the place. I think it needs some sort of super low spring tide to work.

Anyway, it was ridden this year on a huge swell, April 23rd to be exact. It features in this months Carve magazine and pictures can be found at http://www.extremeboardshots.com (search april 23rd).
