surfing in Portugal
Due to it's geographical position, Portugal is blessed with some seriously sweet swells throughout most of the year, You can drive up the coast along 600km+ of open beachbreake and concealed bays. The whole coast is teaming with unknown spots begging to be found. You don't even have to go very far from famous/crowded beaches to find yourself alone with possibly an even better wave than 20-40 people are fighting for five minutes down the road. All you need in portugal is a car and a little spirit and you'll be rewarded. The best swells come in late winter early spring.
Location: Southwestern Europe, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, west of Spain

Terrain: mountainous north of the Tagus River, rolling plains in south

Need some help here!I m planning to visit portugal on april with my girlfriend.i m a beginner but i have my own equipment & my girlfriend doesn t surf at all.I d like to combine surfing with tourism cause i don t want my girlfriend to get bored. That s why i d like to visit a place that has surf but it s also beautiful & picturesque & has things to do among surf.any suggestions???so i believe that staying near lisbon would be fine because i could go for walks & nightlife after surfing.should i book a surf camp or an hotel?are there any other than lisbon nice places that i could stay & which?

kickass surfcountry!
If you are looking for medium to big powerfull waves in a sunny climate not that much different from California then don't miss Portugal. Whatever level you have, you're garanteed that by the end of your trip you have progressed and stepped up to a whole new level. Too bad the big comps are in the end of august when it's the smallest time of the year, so some people are led to believe that Portugese waves are small. How false an impression can be. One year in september (I think 2004) the waves didn't fall beneath headhigh the whole two weeks I was in Ericeira. Except summer, and even then, the problem with Portugal isn't about finding some beach that catches swell, but about finding a beach, reef or point that isn't to much for your abilities. This is definatly a must-visit country for every surfer around the globe. The icing on the rich European cake.

Haven't been to portugal for over 5 years, now returning with kids - so it will be interesting to see how we can work around them and their totalitarian eating-sleeping regime. and my surfing.  I guess I'll hi the water whenever I can, i
