Go to the Fort at Sagres and Tonel is the bay directly below the fort to the west at the bottom of the high, sheer cliffs. Not sure how to get closer than that.

 Additional Information

This spot may be fickle. I have only been there once and surfed there once but it was 4-6ft, light off-shore, sunny and perfect. The waves were low-tide pitching hollow peaks, mental to say the least.

Atmosphere

The west side of the Algarve is great. Not too buisy with great waves. Tonel was perfect when I was there in December, not too cold but not hot. Waves were consistant, just needed more off-shore winds. Gets big on the west coast just like most of Portugal. When this happens drive to a south coast break (literally a few minutes around the corner from Tonel).
Boasts both a fun wave(small day only-less than 3 ft)most of the time is pumping at a minimum size of 4ft,this is when it gets heavy and hollow, rips seemed to be slight when I surfed it,but that was when it was 3-4ft,some rocks both large and small are lurking under the surface, these are visable at low tide.Localism didnt seem a problem when I surfed here, the surfers/bodyboarders were rather freindly.
On a pefect day(which I was lucky to have one of)this spot truly does compete with the worlds famous spots.barrels everywhere.Enjoy.

General

The old Fort looks a bit daunting from the line up at Tonel.

south algarve way too crowded - unfortunately the whole area is overrun by way to many people. better to go to alentejo or middle portugal

RE - I was there that day - it was head high, not the cleanest, we got a few and then drank a coffee in the hut. half and hour after we left the accident happened - found out the next day when we went back for another coffee. Kids were playing around the water and got in trouble, swept out by the big fuckoff rock and got in trouble. real sad story, heavy atmosphere on the beach that day...

tonel accident - first the papers said it were surfing kids in trouble, and their parents tried to save them; now I read that the kids werde playing on a rock by the water´s edge and were flushed down and dragged out by a rip current; does anybody know?
