| | In nearby Paul do Mar, a recent widening of the coastal road resulted in further coastal armoring, and now the waves are affected by backwash at high tide. On the north shore, in Ponta Delgada, a long left point is being threatened by a new jetty and saltwater swimming pool. In Lugar de Baixo, a right point was spared demise by a marina project, but coastal armament continues to add more back wash to the line-up; this despite a promise by the government to remove the seawall and restore the wave to its former glory. Even more surfing locations are threatened by future development proposals, including the waves in Machico, Porto da Cruz, Faja da Areia, and Conteiras.
Environmental groups continue to reach out for international support against what they see as a series of illegal acts, driven by a corrupt government that is only interested in benefiting a select group of businesses and powerful individuals.
