Larry of AUS... - Don't be fooled... the real surf on Finland is on the north shore in the Arctic Circle. Before you laugh some more, see the new issue of Surfer's Journal... the waves there resemble a cold water Indo.

Surfing Finland - The challenge is on - OK, so here is how it goes. I am heading to Finland in August and I have been set, amoung others, the challenge of surfing some waves up there. My initial thoughts were 'no problemo' but having read some of your comments I am not so sure. I cannot afford to lose this challenge and need some local knowledge. 'Kite surfing' and 'body boarding' replys will not help me.

- Best wave in Finland is not in the southern part, go further north and search. Biggest problem finnish surfers have is that some of them are old windsurfers and always look for waves when the storms are pumping. Because of this all they mostly find is onshore slop. Because of the short fetch of our seas we get short swells. But 3-4 h after the storms, thats when you go surfing boys! Yes you can find clean 3-4ft surf in Finland, but only during fall and winter and if you buy a sea chart and search the coast..

c'mon man - give the place a break guys! no harm in calling the truth about the waves, but why the sarcasm and rudeness in some of the comments here? scandinavia is a beautiful place, very freindly and polite good people, stunning women everywhere and such good food and beer that no matter how much you drink and eat you just get healthier. its great to be able to wander around countries like this and everyone wishes you well, no thieves or touts or hassles. thank you to all scandinavians out there, you truly have a great way of life.
anyway, heres a suggestion to anyone going to scandinavia and is bringing boards - leave them at home and take a kite and a kiteboard - its windy and flat and is perfect to kitesurf

The guys in Humboldt must be high........... - ...but you are clearly smoking crack. I guess you *could* surf in the snow or maybe just ski off to Alborg's for nice big pitcher of Aquavit which, if combined with the proper sedatives, *might* take the edge off.

You need a tropical holiday. At the very least a brief respite nearer the equator. Repeatedly dunking yourself in the arctic ocean does not constitute 'surfing'. Much as a jagged outcropping of rock, slick with reindeer feces and putrifying tundra berries can hardly be described as a 'beach'.

Please don't think me rude for addressing these issues in a public forum. I write this in an earnest attempt to help you with what are symptoms of severe mental degeneration that can lead only to complete indigence. These delusions could be the product of something as trivial as polysubstance abuse. Or, might I be correct in assuming that you are of germanic descent? Perhaps this is some sort of misguided attempt to compensate for attrocities commited by your forebearers during the war? Those flashes of light you see through the haze in your igloo are not the aurora borealis, but rather a glimpse of what is to come if we don't work together, and nip this in the bud.

It will no doubt come as a complete shock when I tell you that your girlfriend has had a hard time finding clothes that fit because she is actually a finlandian troll that you managed to capture in a particularly dextrous display of muscle spasms and facial tics. Your plan to enroll her in an aerobic dance class and take her in for 'some work' *might* make her sweaters fit nicely, but sadly, it won't help you in the slightest.

I had, due to my own ignorance, attributed the depressing blandness of your northern european culture to geographic isolation and extend periods of darkness. Only to learn that you are shuffling along in those clogs because massive ammounts of thorazine are require to keep you from reverting to your natural, crack smoking, troll humping, holocaust internalizing, hypothermia inducing state.

I can accept you on those terms, but it would be helpful for the rest of us if instead of beating around the lingenberry bush, you could address these issues without pause or concern of embarrasment. We're all in the same boat, to a greater or lesser extent, are we not?

Now that you have opened up a bit, you will want to share your contact info with us so that we may bring gifts of Gevalia and particularly potent lutefisk. Perhaps at that point you will be willing to tuck your diminutive bride-to-be in to her warm bed whilst we take a short ride to, say, a 'tanning salon'. Everything will be just fine.
