Along the 15 km long wonderfull beach are some special waves- some people who live there know.
There is one spot, where you can rent surfboards and boogyboards. Ask for El Mundo Bar y Restaurante (www.elmundobar.com)
Also La Spiaza Hostel rents boards&has a basic surf shop (www.laspiazapanama.com). The break is located just in front of the restaurant La Estrella del Pacifico, near the end of the main road coming to the beach.
It's better to avoid the river outlets due to strong currents. Better waves from medium to high tide. Higher swells during the winter (may to dec)
The beach is a preciuos spot, there are various restaurants & places renting bed & cabins. Lajas Club (4 air conditioned rooms + restaurant), La Spiaza Backpacker HOstel & Pizza House (beds & cabins + italian food), La Estrella del Pacifico (cabins, rooms & food), LAs Lajas Beach Resort (high level hotel with swimming pool), Bamboo Cabins (apparently nameless...), Mundo Bar and Panamax.
If you go to Panama visit Playa Las Lajas. Maybe it is not the best spot for pro surfers, but it can be a good start for beginners. Good athmosphere, foreverlong beach and an different accomodations for every budget.

Las Lajas - Excellent Family Beach Spot - Las Lajas is definite;y not a surfing break. It is an excellent ocean beach with light grey extra fine sand. It is an excellent place for beginners and children to learn how to body surf and bodyboard. There are basically no strong side currents and no outgoing rips. You normally walk out into the surf 200 - 300 meters to waist deep water. Wait for one of the larger white water waves and jump onto the wave. Best to wait for a double-up white water wave fora more exciting ride. I have 6 top quality 45" bodyboard with bicep leashes and take many groups of tourists and investors here routinely. I live nearby in David, Panama and go surfing at Santa Catalina, Pavonnes and many other secret spots.
