Montepio is a beach break with a substantial rivermouth emptying out near town. Unlike most of the Gulf coast there are lava flows coming down into the water and there are rocky headlands that allow some sandbars to hold more sand. Most of these are a 20 minute walk north of town. The rivermouth is very flooded during the rainy season (May-Oct.) but hurricane swells during this time can provide decent swells. There is a decent hotel overlooking the river and some good eats at restaurants right on the sand.
Overview
Atmosphere
A cool little town. If it is flat rent some horses and head for a series of waterfalls where you can go swimming. A beautiful stretch of coasts, mountains and greenery.
Castro in Montepio/Catemaco?
I have lived in the area for 14 years and never once have heard that Castro and Guevara planned anything there or even visited there.Castro was in Tuxpan and Tampico.I think someone has some wrong information, how about a source for your "information"?

Brujo's
Catemaco is one of the treasures I discovered travelling around Mexico for 8 years. Incredibly picturesque inland lake, good restaurants, too. Two really cool things about it: 1---Che Guevarra and Fidel Castro planned the Cuban Revolution there, and if you are lucky enough to be in the area the third week of March, they have an annual meeting of Mexican witches....awesome time!
