Crowded and over hyped
If there is a swell and ships is breaking don't go there expecting to have it all to yourself, this summer a bunch of SD idiots were there all the time filling up the line-up and surfing like they were in a contest(fighting for every single scrap like hungry dogs), really ruined it for everyone else. They pulled up blaring aweful music with two car loads of fools, set up cameras on tripods and just made it feel like a crowded day in SD. The wave is ok, its a right hand reef break that has a little juice and is pretty fast but doesn't really barrel unless its just rediculously macking. Only one or two take-off spots so if there are more than 8 people out its lame.

Cold Beer at Shipwreck
Just surfed Shipwreck this weekend, June 2-3, with the crowd jockeying to scrape rides from a 3-5 ft swell producing head high to overhead walls. The main attraction was sectiony, and somewhat crumbly but had some juice, while the real deal was a short, powerful, fast, uncrowded left just down the beach. Most importantly there is a beer stand on the road above the break, where you see an old dusty "Coca Cola" sign. The caballero that lives there doesn't speak english, but he supplements his income by selling ice cold cerveza and snack foods. Do him and yourself a favor and stop by for a cold one in the shade, after your session... He takes U.S dollars.

One of my best friend's has a house right next to the weird painted pseudo bed and breakfast. Surfed it, sponged it, and assorted spots down the road, it seemed like more of a long boarding wave the few times Ive been there. Im actually going this weekened so we'll see. I rode some atvs south for like 35 minutes and found an outside reef firing a few overhead when ships was at like 3-4 foot dribble. Waters looked sharky and it was a long way down that shady cliff or a 1/2 mile paddle from any easily accesible land. Wondering if anyone knows where Im taking about. Cool spot though, the village is tight too, never seen someone roasting pig skin on the street before. Illllllllllllll.

just surfed shipwrecks...I am really not a great surfer at all....the place was firing, no question...and if I was a good surfer, I would have been stoked, I stayed outside and caught some good leftover sections. If nothing else, the drive along the coast was worth it..its beautiful.

Fickle fickle fickle
Like most really great waves in the Cabo area (save Zippers, which is *always* fun if you can handle the locs), unless you're prepard to be ON IT when it finally becomes more than another sub-par, sectiony pointbreak you just aren't going to get it very good. And when it IS good, bring your A-game, because it's round, it has power, a sharp bottom and some very tough expats/locals who won't think twice about burning you to get a good one. Unless you're a good paddler and a very good surfer, consider it paved over by surfers who are better and tougher than you -- and go find a spot somewhere else along this sharp, difficult stretch of coast.

Brokeback Beach Revisited
What is the deal with the tent camp of 8 plus begginers sitting on Shipwrecks for the past month. Time to get on home to Colorado or move on to 9 Palms. One kook looks as if he went to some kind of I want to look like Kelly Slater makeover salon. Do not come to east cape in groups unless you are gay. If you are gay like this group, then you are welcome. If you are heterosexual, do not bring your own less than zero crowd with you. How does one learn surfing etiquite in Colorado

dont go unless equipped!!!
can be a great wave 10% of the time and most of the time its funky
bring bootys and a helmet if you wanna barrel hunt here, more often than not, you dont come out if you get too deep-it bend and warps onto very shallow very sharp lava fingers!
great place to getaway, so if you dont like the outdoors dont surf here-respect the locs cause if you dont its a long way back to town when your rig has four flats!!!
THE PLACE DOES NOT HANDLE A CROWD !!!

shipwrecks is the best, bring a case of Pacificos, some food and your 6'6 stop whining about how far it is its only 45 min drive off road. watch out for the agua-malos (manowars)

I'm staying at the Presidente Inter Continential from Christmas through new years. Big question, will it be worth the hassle of me bringing a board? Traveling around the holidays sucks as it is(thanks alot you fucking terrorists), but with a bigass boardbag it will be even tougher. Any suggestions? How about renting?

rare gem revisited
I have to agree that after surfing this area over the last 8 years, Shipwrecks is one very fickle wave. I have caught it really good, maybe, 3 times. Think Maalaea with Kona conditions or glassy. Without the offshore wind that this spot never gets in the summer season, the wave is little more than a glorified close-out. The older local crew surf 8ft.+ guns just so they can attempt to make the wave. When you are on a 6'4", your options are limited. Also know that this spot attracts photo shoots so don't be surprised when a van load of 8 "cover hungry" "pros" invade like locusts. Enjoy!
