boca de yumuri - there is rivermouth wave close to baracoa, around 10 minutes drive from baracoa. when i was there ist was only waist high but the kids there are surfing sometimes and told it will be decent overhead in right conditions.
cuba is safe... - yes it is safe to surf / travel in cuba. i used to live in the neighborhood baracoa which is in the province of habana and it actually used to be home to a naval academy that closed maybe some 10 years ago. i love all of latin america but let me tell you cuba is one of the safest places you can travel on the planet and i'm saying that as a woman. look up the homicide rates for puerto rico, venezeuala, etc and they are through the roof. people should try traveling to places before they post scary things on the internet. anyway, back to surfing, the surf in cuba is hard to find so this directory is really nice. it's a great place to be with or without a board.
Cuba waves - has to be some waves there, will go visit my Cuz, Cris, near Barracoa, he has been theree 11 years, best underwater spear fisherman on east Coast amerika
most educated folks in the americas, for sure

- Is it even safe to surf in Cuba? I remember an article in Surfer Magazine about some pros who went on a trip there and feared for their lives the whole time. They said something about the military offering to "guard" their gear while they went for a surf. Apparently, the surfers or writers saw a sniper setting up behind a hill with a gun aiming towards the line up. The surfers decided to skip out on the surf (thankfully). Anyone remember this story I am talking about?
