New croc sighting in Witch's - Once again I have encountered a huuugee croc in Witch's. It scared the hell out of me and my pals and it was curious how he popped up when the ocean went flat. It was a very scary moment but I learned a new thing about crocs. They usually go into the ocean and return back to the fresh water in 20-35 minutes. They kinda go back to recharge and then go back out for tasty surf dudes! Keep your eyes open when there.

Pavones and where to go - I'm back from my month long surf trip. I finally have time to help out with questions. In Pavones when it's flat you have a few options, you can go to Cabo Matapalo which is across from Pavones and has killer waves (rights), charter a boat and go to punta burica and score off the reef, or take the drive to domincal which offers numerous breaks. To the other guy asking for good places to stay. Avoid tamarindo cause the waves are rarely good there and is very crowded, go to Cabinas Las Olas in Avellanas or Hotel Rancho Playa Negra, they both have great waves. In hermosa go to Terrazas del PAcifico or Loma del Mar. Enjoy and see you in the water soon!

To anonymous / Tamarindo - anonymous : Tamarindo is not my favorite place. There are many other towns that are better in costa rica. If you want to be around tourists and internet access it's a good place to kick it for a day or two. There are many spots around tamarindo. Go to avellanes the place is the best around. Ask a local, they will give you directions. Probably about 30 or so min away drive time. If your going anywhere else just ask....

Where to stay in Pavones - I'm going to Pavones in May and am wondering where the best inexpensive place to stay is. Also, when the waves get flat, where is the closest place to drive to for some alternative waves? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

swell direction? - I know south swells are best for witch's and ollie's, but do these spots pick up any other swell direction? if so which direction? Thanks.

re: where to go - I'm not too familiar with Tamarindo, but once I stayed at Cabinas Las Olas in Hermosa and there was good surf out front. hope this helps

Where to go - Does anyone know were the best surf front hotels that are in Tamarindo and Playa Hermosa. Also were the best breaks are in both areas.

BOAT TRIPS? - Do you need to make reservations for boat trips to witches/ollies in advance? Or can you do it a day or two before while your in CR? Thanks for any help?

How far they swim - You are right, they usually stay close to the rivermouth and don't navigate too far into the ocean. They like to hang around in shallow waters where there are more turtles, crabs, fish, and surfers!! The place that I recommend the most caution is Witch's Rock. This is a national park and thus a breeding ground for crocs. They are very big and know that surfers crowd the lineups. Also, the rivermouth is very big compared to others in the area.
