Strata - No problem. Mal Pais is a lot cooler than Grande. The town is very small and mellow, they have good restaurants, an international flavor, nice small lodges, and much ohhh much better waves than Grande. Go check out Montezuma for some nice shopping and nightlife. I recommend Mary's Restaurant in MalPais and The Place Hotel, very cool lodge. Enjoy your trip...Pura Vida!

Gracias, Alvaro - Thanx for the advice. Mal Pais was my second choice....now it has become my first choice.

Grande Nightmare - Playa Grande has become a nightmare!! Americans have become territorial with that place...to the point where a while back they were talking smack to me and my friends (born and raised in Costa Rica) and telling us to leave "their" beach. The crowds are terrible and their is hostility in the air. Go to Mal Pais, Dominical or Pavones during those times. Better vibes, less crowds and bigger and better waves. Pura Vida!!!

Grande nightmare? - Am planning to surf SOMEWHERE on Nicoya Peninsula end of October/early November (only time I can make it). After reading messages on the Grande message board here, sounds like Playa Grande is a nightmare due to crowds, americans, and Las Tortugas hotel, in spite of good waves. Is it that bad (crowds) in October/November? Suggestion for better spot at that time of year?

Waves Dec-Jan - I'm from Costa Rica and usually the waves during december are not that consistent. I have spent those months on both coasts and no swell. Two years ago I spent a whole month in Limon and last year a whole month in Guanacaste...no swell! I suggest you plan your trip for january-february. Everybody in Costa Rica is off for New Year's Eve vacations and the beaches are CROWDED, that includes the surf breaks and the waves are not that great anyways. Book your trip starting mid january and you will encounter nice waves, less crowds, and nicer weather.
